Hospital honors nurse with DAISY Award

Wythe County Community Hospital awarded Haley Shinault, RN, Med Surg Charge Nurse, with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses during the National Nurses Week celebrations. This prestigious award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s initiative to acknowledge the exceptional efforts nurses perform daily, recognizing their dedication and compassion in providing patient care.

Theresa Dix, Chief Nursing Officer at WCCH, highlighted Haley’s dedication and the significant impact she made on a patient’s family. After the patient’s mother suffered a stroke, Haley’s attentive care left a lasting impression. She consistently provided comfort by applying ChapStick to the patient’s lips and lotion to her legs, feet, and arms. Haley also ensured the family’s needs were met, frequently offering them water and checking on their well-being. Her consistent attention to detail and genuine concern for both the patient and their family demonstrated the exceptional level of care that nurses like Haley provide every day. Theresa Dix remarked, “Haley is a great asset to the facility. Her unwavering commitment to her patients and their families is truly inspiring, and she exemplifies the core values of our nursing staff.”
In addition to recognizing Shinault, several other remarkable nurses were also nominated for the DAISY Award. The nominees included Candace Horton, Sarah Pruett, Beverly Patterson, Kaitlyn Collins and Brittany Bramlet. Each nominee exemplifies the extraordinary efforts and dedication that the DAISY Award seeks to recognize, showcasing the remarkable impact nurses have on their patients and communities.
The DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away in 1999 due to Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The foundation’s mission is to express gratitude to nurses for the extraordinary care they provide, inspired by the care Patrick received during his illness. Today, the foundation’s programs are implemented in over 5,500 healthcare facilities and nursing schools worldwide, celebrating the contributions of individual nurses, nurse-led teams and nurse leaders.
