Crash kills one, injures others

A crash on a stretch of Smyth County’s state Route 16 claimed one life and sent three others to hospitals.

The Virginia State Police responded to a the two-vehicle wreck at 2:43 p.m. on June 10. The crash was a mile and a half south of state Route 676.

According to police, a 1999 Lexus 400 sedan traveling north on 16 ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and crossed the center lane, striking an oncoming 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe.

The impact of the crash caused the Lexus to separate. The rear of the vehicle came to rest in the creek and the front of the vehicle in the southbound lane.

The driver of the Lexus, Ricky Bryant, 61, of Ennice, North Carolina, was flown to Bristol Regional Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

A 14-year-old male passenger of the Lexus was transported to Abingdon Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Another passenger in the Lexus, a 13-year-old male from Ennice, died at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Tahoe, Randy Reedy, 54, of Troutdale was transported to Smyth County Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Bryant was charged with reckless driving.
