E&H hosting education forum virtually

Emory & Henry College will host its annual B.G. Raines Education Forum virtually on March 23 starting at 4:30 p.m.

“For 31 years the B.G Raines Education Forum has brought exemplary educators and leaders from all regions of our nation to Southwest Virginia,” says Dr. Sandra Frederick, education department chair. “These guests provide our local educators and community partners with insights into student learning, current educational research, and sound teaching pedagogy that can immediately be taken back into our regional schools to benefit the children of Southwest Virginia.”

This year’s keynote presentation will be “How We Learn: Five Essential Practices for Successful Learning” presented by Dr. John Almarode.

Almarode has presented his work to the United States Congress, the United States Department of Education, and the Office of Science and Technology Policy at the White House. As Associate Professor, Department of Early, Elementary and Reading Education and Director of the Content Teaching Academy at James Madison University, he works with preservice teachers and conducts research on the science of learning, the design and measurement of classroom environments that promote student engagement and learning.

“Dr. John Almarode’s research on brain-based teaching practices will give educators strategies that they will be able to employ the very next day in their classrooms,” says Frederick.  “We have over 1000 educators in the region that are alumni of our Education Department at Emory & Henry College. It continues to be our mission to have a lasting impact on learning and student growth in our region for generations to come.”

In addition to Almarode’s address, Anthony Swann, 2021 Virginia Teacher of the Year, will also be presenting.

School teachers and officials, education students, and civic leaders interested in education are encouraged to attend. This forum is free and open to the public but registration at https://www.ehc.edu/calendar/ is required.
