E&H takes home nine ADDY awards

Emory & Henry College claimed nine advertising and marketing awards at the 10th annual American Advertising Federation (AAF) of Southwest Virginia American Advertising Awards on Saturday, March 5 at  K-VA-T Corporate Support Center in Abingdon, Va.

Students David Eldridge of Knoxville, Tenn., ‘22; Alexa Shockley of Pearisburg, Va., ‘23; Emmett Donovan of Boonesville, N.C. ‘23; Veronica Garrou of Greensboro, N.C., ‘23; Destiny Fulton of Abingdon, Va. ‘22; Kanin Clark of Abingdon, Va. ‘22; Logan Greear of Coeburn, Va.; ‘23 and Tyler Easley of Gladys, Va., ‘23; won in the student categories during the award ceremony. Eldridge was awarded in the category of television advertisement for his video commercial entitled “CHAD’s Mantidote,” a fictitious seven-function shower gel and breakfast yogurt. Also in the category of Television Advertising, Fulton, Clark, Garrou, Greear and Easley were awarded for their work on “Friendly Navigator – Lung Cancer,” a television commercial. The commercial would not have been possible without the University of Virginia Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach staff curating the scripted scenes captured by the students.

Donovan and Garrou were awarded for their work on branded images. Donovan’s “EMD3M Personal Brand Logo” and Garrou’s “Wurth Logo Treatment” earned awards. Garrou was awarded again for the “Wurth Metal Working Products” digital publication. Shockley was also awarded for the digital production, “Book ‘n’ Cup Newsletter & Brochure.”

“Winning Addy awards is another triumphant testament to the high caliber of the Emory & Henry Media and Communications curriculum,” says Brent Treash, instructor for the department. “We know how talented these students are and are proud of their achievements in various professional categories.”

In addition to the student award winners, three Emory & Henry staff members were recognized by the AAF. Jamie Smyth, Executive Director of Institutional Communications, was awarded a Silver Award for her E&H McGlothlin Center for the Arts Brochure. Leah Prater, Director of Marketing, won a Silver Award for her Emory & Henry Wasp Facts Infographic. Chris Gallaway, Videographer at Horizonline Pictures, earned a Silver Award for the Outdoor Program/Adventure Team Video Internet Commercial. He collaborated with E&H Outdoor staff Jim Harrison and Alex Versen.

“Receiving an Addy award means the student or professional has met the highest standards for evaluating their work,” Treash continues. “When you look at the number of awards earned by the College students and staff, it is a reminder of the bright future for marketing and communications in our region.”
