Federal funds to help pay for telemedicine in Smyth

Telemedicine in Smyth County got a substantial boost thanks to $313,361 in federal funding for Ballad Health.

The money will be used to support a school-based telemedicine virtual health clinic program in Lee and Smyth counties.

The program aims to improve access to care for school children and faculty by removing transportation as an obstacle to care. The federal funds will benefit around 46,000 residents.

The funding was part of a $2.9 million package announced by U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. Other funding was benefitted the Lee County School District, where $752,857 will be used to implement STEM courses and facilitate meet-ups with STEM professionals.

Roanoke-based Carilion Medical Center received $947,983 to enable patient access to services in 14 counties and six independent cities in Southwest, Southside, Roanoke and the Shenandoah Valley by expanding the telemedicine network.

Norfolk’s Retina and Vitreous Center received $887,525 to buy telehealth equipment.
