Gilman leads Maroons to big win over Indians

Makenna Gilman homered twice, once in the first and again in the sixth inning, driving in four runs to lead George Wythe to a 9-4 win over Rural Retreat.

Aniyah Burks went 1-3 for the Maroons, driving in a run on her triple. Jadelyn Faulkner picked up an RBI, too , belting a double. Olivia Shockely also had a double, knocking in one.

Shockley spun a complete game, fanning 12 Indians and surrendering six hits.

Elaina Terry was in the circle for Rural Retreat, striking out four and giving up eight hits.

Hailey Whitlow led the Rural Retreat offense, belting a pair of singles and knocking in a pair of runs. Kailey Davidson drove in the other two Rural Retreat runs with a single. Davidson went 1-4 on the night.

Elsewhere in Wythe County, Fort Chiswell struggled with Lebanon, falling to the Lebanon variety of Pioneer 11-1.

Fort Chiswell got just three hits, and scored its lone run in the second inning as Haley Brumbaugh picked up an RBI off a double.

Blair Jackson struck out nine for the Fort and picked up one of the Pioneer’s three hits. Krista King had the third.
