Hackworth wins Chafin’s seat in special election

Tazewell County Supervisor Travis Hackworth cruised to victory in Tuesday’s special election for the 38th Senate seat vacated by the death of Ben Chafin on Jan. 1.

According to unofficial results from the state Board of Elections, Hackworth received 76 percent of the vote – 17,943. His opponent, Radford health care provider Laurie Buchwald, finished with 5,724 votes.

The margin was even more lopsided in Bland, where Hackworth’s 888 votes accounted for 84 percent. Buchwald received 167 votes in Bland, unofficial results show.

None of the five voters in Montgomery County’s portion of the 38th cast a ballot.

Buchwald carried her home city, beating Hackworth in Radford by a 137-vote margin.

Voters in the Smyth County portion of the 38th, chose Hackworth by 74 percent. Buchwald received 89 votes in Smyth.
