Delma Faye Martin Armbrister

Delma Faye Martin Armbrister, 90, of Max Meadows died Monday, April 10, 2023.

She was born Sept. 14, 1932, in Wythe County, daughter of the late Joseph Wesley and Mary Elizabeth Dean Martin. She was also preceded in death by her son, James Armbrister Jr.

Survivors include her husband, James Herbert Armbrister Sr.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Faye Armbrister Tyrey and Scott of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Roberta Anne Armbrister Wienke and James of Vinton, Virginia; twin sister, Della Armbrister of Wytheville; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 15, at Max Meadows United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Lindamood officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before service time at the church. Burial will follow in West End Cemetery. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, is serving the Armbrister family.

Carolyn June Baldwin

Carolyn June Baldwin, 79, died Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at her home in Marion.

Baldwin was born in Bristol, Virginia, to the late Wallace Arnold and Elizabeth Owens Arnold and was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Eugene Baldwin; son, Chris Gillen; sister, Barbara Brooks; son, Alan Baldwin.

She was a fine Christian woman who loved her Lord and Savior and her family dearly. She was a member of the McCalls Gap Presbyterian Church in Glade Spring and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, her yard and her garden.

Survivors include her children, Tammy Gillen and special friend Patrick, and Lisa Edwards and husband, Richard; grandchildren, Beth Mathews and husband, Craig, Blake Reece and wife, Annette, and Robert Baldwin; great-grandchildren, Cole and Hannah Reece, Keith, Mason and Ben Mathews; brothers, Gary Arnold and wife, Reda, and Donnie Arnold; sisters, Judy Arnold and special friend Gary, Noel Westbrook and Peggy McRae; several nieces and nephews; and her special companion, Christmas.

Lois Marie Caffrey

Lois Marie Caffrey, 88, of Wytheville, died Friday, April 7, 2023.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah Brady; husband, Charles Caffrey; son, Tommy Brady; and sisters, Shirley McFarland and Marie E. Turpin.

Caffrey is survived by sons, Douglas McFarland of Vero Beach, Florida, and Donald Brady of Wytheville; special nieces, Patricia Dillow of Wytheville, Karen Wolhford of Rural Retreat and Sharon Caldwell of Rural Retreat; nephew, Clarence Turpin Jr. of Wytheville; and three grandchildren.

Burial was at West End Cemetery.

Harry “Buster” Goodman

Harry “Buster” Goodman, 77, died Wednesday April 5, 2023, at his home in Marion.

Goodman was born in Marion to the late Harry Vance Goodman Sr. and Martha Lindamood Goodman and was preceded in death by his son, Brent Edward Goodman; daughter, Joyce Hannah Goodman; brother, Daniel Lindamood; sister, Elaine Mayne. 

He retired from Virginia House Furniture and was a farmer in the Walkers Creek community. He enjoyed gardening and spending time in his shed.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Tina Church Goodman; son, Peyton Goodman and wife, Darla; daughter, Jennie Bostic; grandchildren Mina Goodman, Kayley Null and Amara Combs; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters Theresa Taft, Patricia Hubbard and Linda Gross McClure; best friend Pete Glass and his dog, Sir Walter.

Howard “Roscoe” Guinn

Howard “Roscoe” Guinn, 84, died Friday, April 7,

2023, at Carrington Place, Wytheville.

He was born in Meadowview on March 7, 1939. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Sylvia.

Guinn is survived by his sons David Guinn and wife, Brittany, of Meadowview and Richard Guinn and wife, Sandy, of Meadowview; three grandchildren, Makayla Guinn “Sugar doll,” Austin Guinn and Adam Cumbow; and two great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 13, from noon until 1 p.m. at Mount Rose Cemetery, 10069 Crescent Road, Glade Spring. Graveside services will begin at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Casey officiating.

Arne “Aleen” Asbury Hicks

Arne “Aleen” Asbury Hicks, 76, died Sunday, April 9, 2023, at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tennessee.

Hicks was a wonderful, loyal, and loving mother, daughter, sister, granny and friend to many. She never knew a stranger and her grandchildren were her favorite hobby. She enjoyed having picnics and family gatherings at her most favorite place at Lake Witten in Tazewell. She was an amazing cook, making sure everyone was fed and once they were, they kept coming back, especially with her famous gravy n’ biscuits or fried chicken.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janice Marie Marrs; parents, Roy and Lakey Asbury; and 9 brothers and sisters. 

Hicks is survived by daughter, Darla Wyatt and her husband, Leslie, of Statesville, North Carolina; sons Jody Marrs and wife, Vicki, of Wytheville, Toby Marrs of Wytheville and Clyde Marrs of Bristol, Virginia; sisters, Wilma Tolley and husband, Clay, of Bluefield, Virginia, Shirley Bailey and husband, Bill, of Martinsville; brother, Jimmy Asbury of Bishop; 12 grandchildren, Jason, Ellie, Cameron, Kelsey, Kayla, TJ, Zachary, Jeremy, Darla, Dustin, Ashlyn and Darriean; 10 great-grandchildren, Ailiyah, Olivia, Isabella, Charles, Boone, Alexia, Kinsley, Maria, Autumn and Legend; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Angie McGuire, Howard Alley, and Angie Lawson.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 27; location and time is yet to be determined and will be updated when available.

William T. “Butch” Hicks Jr.

William T. “Butch” Hicks Jr., 80, died Friday, April 7, 2023.

Hicks was a faithful member of the Seven Mile Ford United Methodist Church. He was employed at Food City in Chilhowie for more than 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas “Bill” Hicks Sr. and Beulah Bowman Hicks; and brother, Don Hicks.

Survivors include his brother, Robert “Bob” Hicks and wife, Judy; sister-in-law, Sandy Hicks; six special nieces, Donna Fullen and husband, Dean, Chris Ratcliffe, Heather Hicks, Brandi Boardwine and husband, Tommy; Melanie Tillman and husband, Matt; and Julie Soto and husband, Dan; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews; and special friends, Tommy McGhee and Cynthia Robertson.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Freddy Levi “Hillbilly” Hubbard

Freddy Levi “Hillbilly” Hubbard, 68 died April 4, 2023, at Smyth County Community Hospital.

Hubbard was the son of the  late Robert and Margie Stacy Hubbard.

He was formerly of Buchanan County and lived in Chilhowie, Virginia in Valley Nursing Home.

He was preceded in death by four of his brothers, Harley Ellis, William Robert, Charles Arnold, Joel Melvin, and one infant sister, Nancy Fern.

Survivors include two daughters Kitty Cappelletti and  Kandy Spease; two sisters, Majorie Gertrude Wood, of Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth (Freddy) Keen of Vanasant, Virginia; five brothers, Daniel Hubbard (Janet) of Greeneville, Tennessee,  Pete (Denise) Hubbard of Abingdon, Terry (Thelma) Hubbard of Marion, William (Sue) Hubbard of Belfast, Virginia, and Wesley (Robin) Hubbard of Bristol, Virginia; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews

Christie Brewer King

Christie Brewer King, 58, died Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tennessee.

King was born March 28,1965, at Fort Carson, Colorado. She attended North Greene High School and graduated from Chuckey-Doak High School. She was a longtime member of Higher Ground Baptist Church and a graduate of ETSU school of dentistry where she received a degree in dental hygiene. Christie worked at Greeneville Dental Associates until she retired due to disability.

She is preceded in death by her father Bryant F. Brewer; step-father, David H. Rader; maternal grandparents, Ben and Alma Price of Kingsport.

King is survived by her husband, Tommy King; daughter, Lauren King Dalusio (Jaime); two grandsons, Emerson and Parker Dalusio of Johnson City; mother, Judy Price Rader of Kingsport; brother, Bryant L. Brewer of Kingsport; stepdaughter, Jenileigh King McHan (Rusty) of Charleston South Carolina; two step-grandchildren, Jaxon and Ella of Charleston; stepmother, Dorthy Brewer of Nashville; maternal aunt, Phyllis White Dykes (Norman); cousins Angie Carter Williams (John), and Amy Carter Gray; paternal aunts, Leaffie True (Larry) of Versailles, Kentucky, Cherie Keeling Bardstown, Kentucky, and Donna Hutshinson (Joe) Nicholasville, Kentucky; and many extended family members.

A memorial service will be held at a later time.

Melba Dean Martin

Melba Dean Martin, 87, died Sunday April 9, 2023, at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Maryland.

She was born in Grayson County to the late Ambrose M. Weaver and Pearl K. (Richardson) Weaver.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Martin; her brother, Curtis Mae Weaver, and her sister, Alma Lee Hurley.

She was a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She was a 1955 graduate of Marion College, a Lutheran junior women’s college.  She and Billy were members of the Faith Lutheran Church in Whitetop.  She raised her family in Northern Virginia and enjoyed hosting family get-togethers on birthdays, holidays and game days.

When she retired to her childhood home on Mud Creek, in Whitetop, she was a caregiver to her mother, Pearl. During renovations, space was set aside for her grandkids to visit.

Survivors include her sons Nathan Ray (wife, Kim) Martin of Springfield, Virginia, and Joe Allen (wife, Mary) Martin of Annapolis; four grandchildren: Joshua Ryan (wife, Tessa) Martin, Jordan Ambrose Martin, Noelani Pearl Martin, Nicole Elizabeth Lee Martin; one step-grandson, Jason Holt; and one great-granddaughter, Bernadette Joann Martin.

The family will receive friends on Sunday April 16, from 5-6 p.m. at Bradley’s Funeral Home in Marion. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday April 17, at Rose Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Guy Harless Meredith

Guy Harless Meredith, 89, of Wytheville died Saturday, April 8, 2023.

He was born in Virginia on April 27, 1933, to the late Guy Early and Opal Florence Horton Meredith.

Meredith was a member of Sunny Hills Church in Wytheville and a United States Army Veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Goodwin Meredith; and son, Clarence Wayne Meredith. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Dickie Copenhaver of Wytheville; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Lisa Meredith of Wytheville; three grandsons, Aaron Copenhaver and wife, Beth, of Powhatan, Virginia; Nick Meredith and Thomas Meredith of Wytheville; two great-grandsons Michael and Colton Copenhaver of Powhatan; two sisters, Linda Meredith of Woodlawn and Bonnie Johnson of Archdale, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, April 15, at Grubb Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Wilder officiating. Interment will follow in West End Cemetery. Christopher Ryan Poe

Christopher Ryan Poe, 47, died April 8, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Poe, grandparents; Kyle and Carrie Poe, and Edward and Mildred Cornett.

Poe was born on Dec. 17, 1975, in Smyth County. He was an avid collector and loved anything that had to do with history. Chris was also a diehard Miami sports fan. He was a free spirit with a heart of gold, and will always be remembered.

Survivors include, his mother, Dealva Cornett and stepfather Dean Kimberlin; children, Jacob Blevins and Christian Poe; sisters, Pam Howell, Connie Snavely and Brandi Poe; brother, Brian Poe; one granddaughter; special niece and nephew, Tyler Poe and Brianna Crumley; special cousin, Benjamin Cornett; and several other nieces and nephews.

Brian Edward Robinson

Brian Edward Robinson, 37, died Thursday, April 6, 2023, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Robinson was born in Smyth County to the late Ronald and Angela Grubb Robinson. He is also preceded in death by his grandparents Retha Grubb, Cecil Grubb and Martha Robinson. He was employed with Musser Lumber Company in Rural Retreat. Robinson enjoyed spending time working on old cars.

He is survived by his grandfather Robert “Bob” Robinson; aunts and uncles Debbie Weaver, James Grubb and wife, Niecie, Larry Bonham and wife, Mary, Angie Rambo and husband, James, and Kim Galyean and husband, Charles; and cousins Brandon Grubb, Christopher Weaver, Michael Grubb, Levi Grubb, Michael Rambo, Justin Rambo, Savannah Gromley and Cody Bonham.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 14, at Brookside Baptist Church with the Rev. David Medley officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Friday at the church. Drema Robinson

Drema Robinson, 85, died Friday, April 7, 2023, at Francis Marion Manor, Marion.

Robinson was a beautiful example of God’s love. She was a devoted and selfless wife and mother. She gave of herself to help others, thus inspiring her daughters to help others in need. Anyone who knew her fell in love with her beautiful smile and infectious laugh. She even earned the nickname “Mrs. Claus” while a resident at Francis Marion Manor because of her sweet spirit and joyous laugh. She loved being in the kitchen and cooking delicious food for her family. Her daughters will never forget the homemade pies she prepared at Christmas. She made each one their favorite flavor. Her passion of cooking lead to her job in the dietary department of Smyth County Community Hospital. She also loved serving her church family at Marion Baptist Church. She enjoyed sharing her Bible knowledge as a Sunday school teacher for the Rebekah class. She also cooked many Wednesday night meals with brown beans and cornbread being a favorite.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Reeves and Eugenia Osborne; sister-in-law, Ruth Osborne.

Robinsonis survived by her husband of 69 years, Benny Robinson; six daughters, Debra Robinson, Sherry Hester (Gary), Diane McThenia, all of Marion, Sonja Smith (Randy) of Saltville, Lisa Taylor (David), Bluefield, Virginia, and Christie Turner (Kevin) of Ridgeway; eight grandchildren, Brent Hester (Sarah), Kayla Winebarger (Julius), J.D. Taylor (Casey), Jacob Smith (Kellie), Ben Taylor (Dakota), Corey Turner, Rachel Puckett (Garrett) and Vannah Shouse; step-grandchild, Landon Smith (Carol); eight great-grandchildren, Payton Hester, Dalton Hester, Ross Winebarger, Lillian Taylor, Hadley Taylor, Bexley Smith, Ashley Puckett and River Taylor; step-great-grandchildren, Kate Smith and Emmi Smith; brothers, Denver Osborne (Louise), and Robert Osborne, all of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 14, from 10 until 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel, 237 East Main Street, Marion. Private family services will be held Friday, at 11:30 a.m. with the Revs. David Taylor and Dr. Charles Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion UMC Cemetery, Marion.

Martha Ilene Roland

Martha Ilene Roland, 76, died Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Roland was born in West Jefferson, North Carolina, on June 28, 1946. She worked more than 30 years at Buster Brown in Chilhowie, and then went to work many years at Wal-Mart in Marion. She was a devoted member of Grosses Creek Baptist Church, and always put God first in her life. She was dedicated to her family and cherished all the time they spent together.

She is preceded in death by her parents Claude and Maggie Hart Wyatt; her husband James “Jimmy” Franklin Roland; brothers Reece Wyatt and wife, Rena, Herman Wyatt, Bobby Wyatt, and Donald Wyatt; sisters Ruby Royal and husband, Redford, Jean Reeves and husband, Herbert, and Shirley Sheets; and a brother-in-law Victor Miller.

She is survived by her two sons Jimmy Roland and wife, Sharon, of Marion, and Michael Roland and Amy of Chilhowie; grandchildren Nicholas Roland and wife, Karen, of Bristol, Cage Roland of Chilhowie, and Braylin Roland of Marion; brother Raleigh Wyatt and wife, Juanita, of Chilhowie; sister Agnus Miller of Pennsylvania; sisters-in-law Margaret Wyatt, Jean Wyatt and Vicky Wyatt; brother-in-law Rick Sheets; special friends Frances Cox and Doris Pennington; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.

Paul Timothy Sturgill

Paul Timothy Sturgill, 65, died Sunday, April 9, 2023, at his home in Chilhowie.

Sturgill was born in Smyth County to the late Paul Richard Sturgill and Yvonne Blevins Sturgill.

He retired with 40-plus years of service from General Dynamics in Marion. He was an avid outdoorsman.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting and competed in many archery competitions throughout the years. He made everyone feel welcome whenever visiting with him at his home. He helped many children, family, and friends learn how to hunt, fish, and live off the land at his farm in Chilhowie. He was a humble, easy-going man who never seemed to meet a stranger.

He is survived by his two daughters, Amanda Bradley and husband, Jamie, and Heather Sturgill and companion Kimberly; sisters, Audrey Powers and husband, Carl, and Glenna Frantz and husband, Steve; grandchildren Jacob, Jaden, James, Jayla, Jayce, Ava, Alayla, Abby, Abel and Azariah; several nieces, nephews; and many friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m., on Wednesday, April 12, at the Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion. Private graveside services will be held on Thursday at South Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Marion with Jamie Bradley officiating. Peggy Wayne Gamble Tuell

Peggy Wayne Gamble Tuell, 84, died Monday April 10, 2023, two days short of her 85th birthday at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Tuell was born in Marion to the late Wayne Gamble and Elizabeth Copenhaver Gamble and was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon “Buddy” Tuell, and her daughter, Amy Lynne Tuell. 

She was a member of the Seven Mile Ford Christian Church where she played the organ, the piano and taught Sunday school. She was a graduate of Marion College, a graduate of Emory & Henry College, attended Radford College and the University of Virginia.  She had her Master’s Degree in music from the St. Louis School of Music. She retired from the Smyth County School System.

Survivors include, her step-granddaughter, Alicia Williams Poston and husband, David; great-grandchildren Alexis and Caleb; special friends, Paul and Pam Williams; special cousins, Doris Robinson, Pam Jamarik and husband, Rob, the Counts family, and her church family at Seven Mile Ford Christian Church.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at Bradley’s Funeral Home in Marion with the Revs. Frank Branson and Jerry Williams officiating. Music will be provided by the Rev. Mike Sage. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. prior to services.  Entombment services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery. Jerry Allen Woods, 55, died Thursday, April 6, 2023.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Otis Leroy Woods Sr. and Ruby Jean Woods; and brother, Roy Woods.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Peake Woods; children, Shane Allen Woods and wife, Kayla, and Hannah Woods and fiancé Nicky Wyatt; grandchildren, Ian McCracken, Elijah Breedlove, Ema McCracken, and Eli Call; siblings, Wayne Woods and wife, Tina, Elaine Dixon and husband, Johnny, DeeDee Davis and husband, Mark, Tammy Woods and Sherry Woods; father and mother-in-law, Roger and Jo Ann Peake; sister-in-law, Jeannie Haynes and husband, David; and several nieces and nephews.

Joan Hurt Wynn

Joan Hurt Wynn, 93, of Rural Retreat died Saturday, April 8, 2023. 

She was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, on Nov. 19, 1929, to Riley Garland Hurt and Zollie Meredith Hurt. 

She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Bobby E. Wynn, and siblings Carl Hurt, Pete Hurt, Charlotte Thompson, Mabel Meeks, Jackie Rowe and Gene Hurt and nephews Rodney Hurt and Jerry Hurt.

She is survived by nephew Larry Hurt; stepsons Ricky Wynn and Randy Wynn; special nieces Bettie Sutton, Sue Van Vranken, Lee Winter, Judy Leatherman and Phyllis Hurt (niece-in-law); and several other nieces and nephews.

Wynn worked in the garment industries in Rural Retreat and Wytheville.  As a woman of faith, she was a longstanding member of Rural Retreat United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women and the RRUMC Quilters.  She also enjoyed participating in the Rural Retreat Senior Citizens organization.

Burial was at Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
