Peak leaf peeping getting close

We aren’t seeing peak fall foliage colors just yet in the western region, but we can tell it’s getting close. The green leaves scattered throughout the region are finally being replaced by yellows, reds and oranges. Let the countdown to peak colors begin!

Enjoy bird watching, hiking, biking or have a camping adventure! Park programs are available to help connect you to nature. Be sure to share your fall photos from your adventures on social media using the hashtags #VaStateParks and #FallinVirginia to be part of the online conversation.

After a weekend of rain and wind, it seems like we’ve lost a great deal of leaves. However, there is still an abundance of beautiful colors around us. We can still see numerous yellows and oranges, and it seems like the reds are slowly making their way into the mix.

Best place to view: Right now, the best place to view is at the spillway and along the front side of the Lake Trail. Highway 16 is gorgeous coming into the park—lots of yellows and oranges.
