Police urge caution as school starts

With school starting next week in Wythe County, the Wytheville Police Department reminds the parents of Spiller Elementary School students to go over school drop-off and pick-up measures with their children.

The police said the first day of school shouldn’t be the first time going to the drop off or pick up area, suggesting guardians load the car up this weekend and put in some test runs.

Traffic cones are set up to guide parents and guardians during dropping off and picking up, and are there to make traffic flow efficient.

The department also reminded adults to not cut in line or save space for others.

Traffic tends to back up in the mornings between 7:30 and 8:15 a.m. and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Tazewell Street is the drop off for second- through fifth-grade students while 3rd Street is fro those in pre-k through first-grade. Those in this group should not drive to the front of the school or get onto Tazewell. Instead they should turn left onto West North Street or onto South 1st Street. There is no right turn onto Tazewell from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Those picking up students must have a parent pick up pass displayed. Those without a pass will have to park and go into the school to pick up their students in the office.
