Pursuit ends with crash in Smyth County

A state trooper tried to stop a speeding Toyota Camry traveling northbound on Interstate 81 near the 30 mile marker in Washington County on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.

The 2007 Camry failed to stop and the Virginia State Police trooper gave chase, following the car at a high rate of speed into Smyth County, where the sheriff’s officer used spike strips to stop the car.

The strip deflated three of the Camry’s tires, but still it continued, eventually crashing into the guardrail at the 47.7 mile marker.

The driver, a 30-year-old female from Greer, South Carolina, was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment.
