Rabid skunk found in Wythe

This skunk didn’t bring presents, but it arrived in Barren Springs on Christmas Day.

Mount Rogers Health District is warning area residents that a skunk entered the fenced yard of three down on the 300-400 blocks of Mountain View Road in Barren Springs and began fighting with the dogs.

The skunk subsequently tested positive for rabies.

If you have had contact with the rabid skunk, call 276-228-5507. Make sure your pets’ rabies vaccinations are up to date. Rabies if fatal once the symptoms appear.

All mammals can get rabies, which is most commonly transmitted by a bite.
