Robertson named marketing, communications director for United Way

Scott Robertson has been named director of Marketing and Communications for the United Way of Southwest Virginia.

Robertson joins a growing team, leveraging social media platforms, traditional media and in-person opportunities to empower United Way staff, volunteers and supporters to address the challenges facing tomorrow’s workforce. His responsibilities will include the direction of strategic marketing and promotions, communications project management and oversight of digital services. Robertson assumes the role on Aug. 9.

Scott’s proven track record of influencing stakeholders to become involved is important to the continued development of our new model United Way.  The communities we serve must know how to become involved in developing solutions that will make long-term generational change in our region.  Scott will lead communications to reach and engage these audiences in new ways,” said Travis Staton, president and chief executive officer of United Way of Southwest Virginia.

Robertson has nearly three decades of experience telling stories that matter via broadcast, print and online platforms. Most recently, as managing editor of the  Business Journal of Tri-Cities TN/VA, he focused the content of the publication on the economic and community development issues that are core to the mission of the United Way of Southwest Virginia. In addition, Robertson has been involved in numerous regional visioning, workforce and community health initiatives including Pathways to Progress, Bristol 2040 and RegionAHEAD.

“The successes of the United Way of Southwest Virginia’s cradle-to-career approach to building prosperity in the region are really the successes of individual Southwest Virginians building better lives. That is a story that needs to be heard both in and outside this region,” Robertson said. “I’m thrilled to join an organization that is both community-oriented and results-driven. I’m eager to play a role in the inspiring, transformative work that’s already being done here.”

Robertson holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Tennessee. He is a recipient of multiple national awards for editorial writing as well as regional and state awards from the Tennessee and Virginia Associated Press and the Tri-City Metro Advertising Federation.
