Runners compete in regional indoor track meets

Local runners competed in a pair of regional indoor track meets on Saturday at Roanoke College.

In Region C, Fort Chiswell’s girls finished sixth and the George Wythe boys and girls were eighth. Chilhowie girls took third in Region D, followed by Marion in fourth and Rural Retreat in eighths. The Rural Retreat boys were second, Marion finished sixth and Chilhowie in eighth.

In the 4×800 in Region D, Rural Retreat’s Owen Chatterton, Micah Hamman, Jacob Howell and Jacob Crouse finished in 10:15.67 to earn fourth. Chilhowie’s team of Jacob Blackwell, J.T. Moore, Noah Ring and Hunter Hall finished in 10:42.65, earning fifth place. Marion’s team of Wyatt Hall, Cameron Draper, Will Burkett and Ben Roberson finished sixth with a time of 11:40.53.

Marion senior Gracie Umbarger nabbed gold in the Region D 55-meter hurdles, posting a 9.92 finish. In Region C’s 55-meter dash, Fort Chiswell’s Aurora Haywood finished in ninth place with a time of 8.45. Her junior teammate, Madison Akers, was 11th, clocking in at 8.51. Peyten Thompson of George Wythe was 12th with a time of 8.54, and Katie Alderman of FC clocked in at 8.66 for 15th. Umbarger led the local group in the Region D 55-meter dash, coming in third with a time of 7.92. Chilhowie’s Autumn Green took fifth with a time of 8.18. Keiana Jones, a Marion senior, finished in sixth with a time of 8.24. Hurricane freshman Ava Smith turned in a time of 8.57 to earn 12th, and Lydia Brewer led Rural Retreat’s contingent with a 16th place 9.31 race.

In the boys 55-meter dash, George Wythe sophomore Brock Smelser led the locals in the Region C race, finishing third with a time of 7.00. Fort Chiswell freshman Luke Viars finished in 7.47 to earn 11th. Aidan Groseclose of Fort Chiswell turned in a time of 7.91 for 18th place. Teammate Jackson Waller finished in 19th with a time of 8.16.

In the Region D boys 55-meters, Marion senior Travis Doane turned in a third-place time at 6.91. Gunner Hagerman of Rural Retreat raced to fifth, stopping the watch at 7.08. Fellow Indian Gatlin Hight was seventh, clocking in at 7.24. Okeeba Meade of Marion finished in 10th with a time of 7.46. Chilhowie freshman finished in 7.58 to earn 13th place. In 17th, with a time of 8.06, was Chilhowie freshman River Peaslee. Cody Harrington of Rural Retreat clocked in at 8.49 for 20th and Nate Thomas of Chilhowie finished in 21st with a time of 8.90.

Justice Ring, a Marion freshman, finished seventh in the Region D girls 1600 meter run, stopping the clock at 7.34.00. Cane junior Jeramy Salks led the boys with a 5:09.94, good for fourth. His teammate Will Burkett finished ninth, clocking in at 6:00.02.

GW took fourth in the Region C girls 4×200 relay, clocking in at 2:05.97. Marion, in the Region D grouping, finished second with a 2:08.74 race. Rural Retreat’s boys finished second in the 4×200, posting a 1:45.20 time. Marion was fifth with a 1:53.13 finish, and Chilhowie clocked in at 2:04.84 to earn sixth.

In the Region C girls 500-meter run, Fort Chiswell junior Katie Alderman secured sixth, finishing at 1:34.29. Aurora Haywood was 10th, finishing at 1:42.41. Chilhowie’s Kayman Atwell was second in the Region D run, finishing at 1:33.00. Her teammate Audrey Gilley was third, clocking in at 1:34.32. Lydia Brewer of Rural Retreat clocked in at 1:47.60 to claim fifth. Emily Hash, a Marion freshman, took sixth, posting a 1:51.36 finish. Justice Ring turned in a time of 2:01.10 for eighth and fellow Cane Haley Queen clocked in at 2:03.69, good for ninth place.

In the Region C boys 500-meter run, GW senior Dylan Jones grabbed gold with a 1:12.02 finish. Luke Clark, also of George Wythe, finished ninth with a time of 1:19.21, and Fort Chiswell freshman Jackson Waller took 12th with a 1:27.57 race. Rural Retreat’s Jonah Hamman nabbed gold in the Region D race, posting a 1:17.32 finish. Hunter Hall of Chilhowie was third, turning in a 1:18.97 run. Micah Hamman of Rural Retreat followed in fourth with a 1:19.90 finish. Jake Russell of Chilhowie clocked in at 1:22.08 for fifth. Fellow Warrior Jacob Blackwell clocked in at 1:31.55 to earn ninth, and Marion’s Branson Snider clocked in at 2:00.59, good for 11th.

Chilhowie’s Tess Somervell and Kenna Russell finished fourth and sixth, respectively in the Region D girls 1000-meter run. Somervell clocked in at 3:33.03 and Russell at 4:06.26.

In the Region C boys 1000-meters, Oscar Montgomery and Nathan Swatsky, both from George Wythe, finished in 10th and 14th, respectively. Montgomery finished in 3:11.00 and Swatsky in 3:33.80. Marion freshman Domenico Bruzzo-Morel took fourth on the Region D side, posting a 3:03.73. Chilhowie’s J.T. Moore clocked in at 3:24.90, good for ninth. Cameron Draper of Marion finished in 3:48.55 for 11th place. In 12th was Marion’s Wyatt Hall, stopping the clock at 3:57.56.

In the Region C girls 300-meter dash, Fort Chiswell’s Katie Alerman secured eighth with a 50.65, and her teammate Madison Akers finished in 11th with a time of 52.10. Fellow Pioneer Aurora Haywood took 14th with a 53.60. Audrey Gilley of Chilhowie was fourth in the Region D race, clocking in at 50.31. Another pair of Warriors, Autumn Green and Kayman Atwell finished in fifth and eighth, respectively. Green clocked in at 50.49 and Atwell at 51.51. Marion’s Keiana Jones finished in 51.79 for ninth and her teammates Alyssa Tolbert and Ava Smith were 11th and 15th, respectively. Tolbert stopped the watches at 54.15 and Smith at 55.26. Rural Retreat’s Lydia Brewer clocked in at 57.37 to claim 17th.

Among the Region C boys, GW’s Brock Smelser claimed eighth in the 300-meters with a time of 40.47. Luke Viars of Fort Chiswell turned in a time of 44.83 to earn 15th. His teammates Jackson Waller and Aidan Groseclose finished in 16th and 20th, respectively. Waller clocked in at 46.19 and Groseclose at 52.05. In Region D, Gunner Hagerman of Rural Retreat grabbed third with a 40.05 run. Marion’s Odeeba Meade was ninth, stopping the clock at 45.60. Miles Harrington of Marion was 13th, finishing in 48.34. Noah Ring of Chilhowie finished in 51.10 to take 16th and Cody Harrington of Rural Retreat was 17th with a time of 51.53.

In the Region D Boys 3200-meter run, Marion’s Domenico Bruzzo-Morel claimed third, clocking in at 11:14.79. Teammate Jeramy Salks clocked in at 11:19.12 for fourth.

In Region C, the GW girls took third in the 4×400 relay, posting a 4:55.28 time. Chilhowie’s girls were second in the Region D relay, posting a 4:49.58. The GW boys finished fourth, clocking in at 3:54.05. Rural Retreat was first in Region D, posting a time of 4:07.15. Chilhowie was second with a time of 4:08.92.

Aurora Haywood and Fort Chiswell teammate Madison Akers finished third and ninth, respectively, in the Region C girls long jump. Haywood leapt 13 feet, 4 inches and Akers 12 feet, 3 inches. Olivia Crigger grabbed gold on the Region D side with a 15-foot, 7.75-inch jump. Chilhowie’s Kayman Atwell was fifth, hitting 13 feet, 10 inches. Marion’s Raegan Cox took eighth with a 13-foot, 3-inch jump and Emily Hash hit 12 feet 8 inches for ninth.

Fort Chiswell’s Luke Viars, Jackson Waller and Aidan Groseclose took 11th, 13th and 14th, respectively in the Region C boys long jump. Viars leapt 16 feet, 2.75 inches, Waller 13 feet, 8 inches and Groseclose 13 feet, 7.5 inches. In Region D, Jacob Crouse of Rural Retreat was fourth with a 16-foot, 9.5-inch lap. Hunter Hall of Chilhowie was fifth with a 16-foot, 3.75-inch effort. His teammates Dawson Tuell and Jake Russell were seventh and eighth, respectively. Tuell jumped 15 feet, 7.25 inches and Russell 15 feet, 5 inches. Gunner Hagerman of Rural Retreat jumped 12 feet, 3.75 inches for 13th place.

In the triple jump, Katie Alderman was third, covering 30 feet, 4.25 inches. Aurora Haywaood was fifth, hitting 29 feet, 5.5 inches and Akers leapt 28 feet, 7.75 inches for eighth place. Rural Retreat’s Olivia Crigger won the Region D side, too, finishing first with a 32-foot, 6-inch jump. Kayman Atwell and Audrey Gilley were third and fifth, respectively for Chilhowie, leaping 29 feet, 5 inches and 28 feet, 5.75 inches.

Fort’s Aidan Groseclose covered 32 feet, 5.75 inches in the Region C boys triple jump to take seventh place. In Region D, Rural Retreat’s Gunner Hagerman took fourth, leaping 36 feet, 2 inches, and Jonah Hamman was fifth with a 36-foot, 2-inch jump. Jonah Hamman secured fifth with a time of 35-foot, 5.25-inch effort.

Katie Alderman of Fort Chiswell finished fourth in the high jump for Region C, clearing 4 feet, 6 inches. Marion’s Raegan Cox led the Region D contingent with a 4-foot, 10-inch leap, good for the gold. Fellow Cane Carolena Nipper was fifth, clearing a 4-foot bar.

Rural Retreat’s Christopher Sapp finished second in the Region D boys high jump with a 5-foot leap.

In the shot put, GW’s Christal Clarke took fifth among the Region C girls, tossing for 27 feet, 6.5 inches. Her teammate Anastasia Kapranos was seventh, throwing 22 feet. In Region D, Chilhowie’s Gwen Robbins wound up in sixth with a 27-foot, 2.5-inch put. Marion’s Hannah Funk tossed for 22-feet, 9.5 inches to earn 10th. Marion’s Emily Hash’s 21-foot, 6.5-inch toss earned her 12th. Sarah Myers of Marion finished in 13th, throwing for 20 feet, 11 inches.

Brock Ayers led a Maroon trio in the boys Region C shot put, finishing sixth with 33 feet, 3.5 inches. Bryce Gregory’s 27-foot, 11.25-inch toss was good for 10th. Kyle Stephens finished in 11th with a 26-foot, 4.75-inch effort. In Region D, Marion’s Jonathan Creasy, Ben Roberson and Levi Testerman secured eighth through 10th in that order. Creasy tossed for 31 feet, 4.5 inches, Roberson for 31 feet, 0.5 inches and Testerman for 30 feet, 11 inches. Chilhowie’s Nate Tayler came in 11th with a 29-foot, 7.5-inch toss and Blake Pappas was 14th, throwing for 25 feet, 2 inches.
