Wasps picked for All-State softball team

The Emory & Henry College Softball Team has seen two of its players named All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors, VaSID officials announced Thursday. This marks the fifth year in a row that an E&H player has been tabbed to the All-State College Division Teams.

Senior pitcher/designated player Alex Braun adds yet another honor to her resume with a nod to the All-State First Team while junior left fielder Nicole Cox was tabbed to the second team.

Braun had been previously named a NFCA First-Team All-American as well as to the NFCA All-Atlantic Region First Team and was the first player in Old Dominion Athletic Conference history to earn two spots on the all-league first team.

Cox received her first All-ODAC honor this year as she was selected to the all-conference first team by the league’s head coaches.

Emory & Henry finished the year with a 29-9 overall record and was the runner-up in the Seguin Regional of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Wasps were ranked as high as No. 9 in the country twice this year with the final poll remaining. E&H’s .763 winning percentage is the best in program history and their 29 wins were good for fourth-most all-time.

NCAA Division III National Champion Virginia Wesleyan University swept the major awards as Jessica Goldyn was named State Player of the Year, Hanna Hull was named State Pitcher of the Year, Emily Seale was selected as State Rookie of the Year and Brandon Elliott was honored as State Coach of the Year.

VaSID, founded in 1983, names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all sports information professionals working at a university or conference in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
