Work continues on Rock House Museum

Work is continuing on shoring up and eventually re-opening the Haller-Gibboney Rock House Museum at 205 Tazewell St.

The Haller-Gibboney Rock House Museum Stabilization and Restoration Project is scheduled for completion by June, just in time for the 200th anniversary celebration of Rock House.

The Rock House was built in 1823 and served as a private home.

Later, it was bought by Dr. John Haller, the town’s first resident physician.

The Rock House was the town of Wytheville’s first museum, opening in 1972.

UMA works to stabilize the historic Wytheville landmark. Here a worker for UMA inserts polymer into the foundation on the west side of the Rock House. The crew raised the front west side of the building 1/16th of an inch.
