Wythe Raceway clay heats up on July 3

Jerry Dillow was back in familiar territory, taking first on a solid run in the Super Street Twin Feature 1. Dillow of Bluefield, West Virginia, qualified in the first spot, too.

Sugar Grove’s Keith Griffits rose from a fifth place start to come in second, followed by fellow Sugar Grove driver Eddie Bentley. Brian Coake was fourth, and Marion’s Dale Hancock claimed the fifth spot. Tazewell’s Michael Deskins was sixth, followed by Brian Peeples. Jerry Stanley of Abingdon finished in eighth, and Chilhowie’s Randy Taylor took ninth. In 10th place was Lebanon’s Brandon Hale, and Sparta, North Carolina, driver Chris Lester. Everett Cox of Austinville was 12th, and Glade Spring’s Jerry McClure secured 13th.

In the second feature of the Super Streets, Griffits ran solid to come in first. Coake was second, with Dillow nabbing third, just ahead of Hancock. Taylor took fifth and Bentley sixth. Peeple, Stanley and Hale came in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Deskins secured 10th and Lester finished in 11th.

Griffitts is leading the standings in the Super Street, 57 points in front of Deskins. Hancock is in third, followed by Taylor.

In the Pro Mini race, Kevin Atwell overtook Tanner Cook to claim first. Atwell is a Rural Retreat driver and Cook is from Wytheville. In third was Wytheville’s Aaron Bowes, followed by Marion’s Travis Harden. Lansing, North Carolina, driver Brad Carpenter secured fifth, and Shane and Shawn King, both from Wytheville, finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Chuck Johnson claimed eighth, followed by Timmy Hill and Rural Retreat’s Billy Cline. Derek Farris of Marion finished in 11th. In 12th was Chris Lester of Sparta, North Carolina.

Atwell is leading the standings in the Pro Mini, ahead of Cook by four points. Shane King is in third and Shawn King is in fourth.

Braxton Surber emerged victorious once again from the five-car KCAR field. The Sugar Grove driver grabbed the checkered flag ahead of Galax’s Ethan Jones. In third was Kevin Johnson of Rural Retreat, followed by Gavin Arnold and Hadran Taylor.

Justin Tate pulled ahead of Crockett’s Brian Tate to take first in the UCAR event. Tate settled for an 11th place finish. Kayla Surber of Sugar Grove fought her way to second, followed by Gregory Story in third. Ryan Shelton, a Marion driver, finished fourth, and Wytheville’s Blake Hedrick moved from a 13th-place start to finish in fifth. Jacob Harmon of Lebanon was sixth, followed by Ronnie Hall. Ricky Ward of Marion and Noah Taylor finished in eighth and ninth, respectively. In 10th was Chilhowie’s Amber Huffman. Aaron Bowes of Wytheville wound up in 12th.

Surber is atop the leaderboard in the UCAR events with a 43 point lead over Ward. Will Hostetler is third.

Tam Topham repeated a fine piece of driving in the Wythe Eye Pro Modified Twin Feature, finishing first after a first-place start. Bluefield, West Virginia, driver Richard Shupe came in second, followed by Crockett’s J.R. Davis. Cole Hedrick of Wytheville finished in fourth, and Randy Kinder of Radford claimed fifth. In seventh was Rural Retreat’s R.K. Dix and Jason Powers of Marion. Lonnie Parker was ninth, and Rocky Gap’s T.J. Hicks took 10th. Dustin Dowell of Sugar Grove finished 11th.

In the second of the twin feature, Shupe and Topham swapped spots, followed by Davis in third. Kinder took fourth, and Power was in fifth. Dowell ran sixth, followed by Parker and Hedrick. Cody Umburger was ninth, with Dix  and Hicks rounding out the field.

As of July 5, Davis is leading the standings in the Pro Modified board, four points ahead of Shupe. Kinder is third.
