Wytheville Community College (WCC) will continue to offer the majority of classes online during the Spring semester, beginning on January 11, 2021. Dr. Glenn DuBois, Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), delivered an open letter to the students of all 23 Virginia Community Colleges stating the intention of continuing virtual classes in spring. The decision to deliver instruction virtually and limit face-to-face classes was made in order to help keep students, faculty, and staff at WCC safe and healthy.
Most classes will be offered online, with some classes being available in a hybrid format. A limited number of classes in occupational or healthcare programs that require hands-on training will meet face-to-face. All face-to-face classes will be carefully planned to adhere to guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Virginia Department of Health (VDH), and other state agencies. Access to WCC buildings will remain limited to students, faculty, and staff, with many faculty and staff continuing to work remotely.
“Even though we have been dealing with the current pandemic for several months now, we must remain vigilant in keeping our faculty, staff, students, and community safe,” said Dr. Dean E. Sprinkle, WCC President. “We are working to provide students with the resources they need to be successful in virtual classes.”
Many student support services–such as advising, counseling, and tutoring–are offered virtually. The college has expanded wifi service to parking lots on the Wytheville campus and at its site at the Crossroads Institute in Galax. Additionally, students may now schedule appointments to access resources and the internet in the WCC Learning Resources Center on the Wytheville campus. Registration for Spring Semester classes is now open. WCC is offering in-person registration opportunities on Friday, December 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and again on Thursday, December 10, from 2:00 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Special funding through the “Re-Employing Virginians” Program is available to eligible Virginia residents who either lost their jobs or had their work hours reduced as a direct result of COVID-19 and who wish to enroll in several approved programs. The deadline for accessing these special funds is December 14. More information about this program is available at www.wcc.vccs.edu/REV.

In addition to the decision to for classes to remain primarily virtual, most regular college-sponsored events will also be cancelled during the Spring 2021 semester. These events include WCC Concert Band performances, WCC Theatre auditions, rehearsals, and performances, and WCC’s Old-Time and Bluegrass Jamboree. While in-person WCC Choir Concerts have been cancelled, the WCC Choir is planning a virtual concert with the date to be announced at later time.
