Wytheville golfers finish first, second in age group

Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, West Virginia, welcomed the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour to the famed Cobb Course on Wednesday July 5.

As part of the 25th season of the regional junior tour, the aspiring young golfers tested their skills on the highly decorated George Cobb design that has been the site of many highly contested championship events.

“Hospitality is the common practice at Glade Springs,” Tour coordinator Dewayne Belcher said. “Our players are treated like royalty and we are very appreciative of their generosity.  The Cobb Course is fantastic as well making for a very nice experience.”

In the 17- and 18-year-old age group, Pearisburg’s Walker Gillespie grabbed the win, shooting a par 72 on the 6,629-yard course. Gillespie finished with birdies on three of the final five holes, posting an inward nine bogey-free total of 33 to distance himself from the pack.

Lucas Beeler of Radford was second, shooting a 78. In third was Coltan Ferrell of Newport, Virginia, who carded an 80.

Harris Camp of Roanoke came in one stroke below par, shooting a 71 on the 6,134-yard course in the 15- and 16-year-old age group. Camp edged Floyd’s Isaiah Cantrell by one stroke.

Camp started with a three-putt bogey on the first but made up for the mistake by scoring an eagle three on the par 5 second hole when he hit a seven iron three feet from the hole.  Two other birdies would come allowing him the narrow victory margin.

“I hit the ball straight and good most of the day, and I putted well also.  It feels good to win,” Camp said.

Cantrell played impressively consistent making three birdies along with three bogeys to unfortunately finish one stroke back.

Peyton Mason of Willis finished third with a total of 79.

In the 13- to 14-year-old age group, Tyler Stover of Beckley, West Virginia, shot a 79 on the par 72 5,431 yard course. It was Stover’s second time winning the age group. He made eight pars and two birdies to shave a one-shot advantage over Evan Singleton of Pulaski.

Jack Herbert of Blacksburg shot 82 for third place. In fourth, Brody Thomas of Glade Spring carded an 84.

In the 10- to 12-year-old group, Colson Tickle finished with a four over par 40 to take the win on the 2,483-yard course. Liam Smith of Elliston took second with a 41, and Anderson Lilly of Oak Hill, West Virginia, finished in third, shooting a 43.

Wytheville’s Colton Caudill claimed a win in the youngest age group, shooting a 42 on the par 36, 9 and under 1,662-yard course. Silas Edmonds, also of Wytheville, came in second, carding a 49. Michael Brown of Blacksburg finished in third with a 54.

The Tour continues next week with a stop at the Great Oaks Country Club in Floyd.
