Wytheville PD warns of increased traffic near Food City, Dollar General

As Food City opens and Dollar General continues to be a popular stop for shopping, Wytheville Police are anticipating heavier traffic on U.S. Highway 11 out of town. It’s not just more vehicles, either. Police warned that pedestrian traffic at the two locations will be higher and advised drivers to be aware, slow down, watch for pedestrians and watch for traffic entering and exiting the stores.

In an effort to make Wytheville more pedestrian-friendly, a crosswalk has been added at the intersection of Withers Road and 1st Street. Police advised that a pedestrian standing at a crosswalk has the right-of-way and motorists must yield. Signs reminding drivers have been installed at several crosswalks.

Police also reminding pedestrians to always look both ways, twice, to make sure that it is safe to cross.

Officials recommended that those walking after dark not wear dark-colored clothing, saying it makes them harder to see.
