‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ on stage at UVA-Wise

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Theater Department stages the workings of love as residents of Athens mingle with fairies from a local forest in their production of William Shakespeare’s, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” set to open Thursday, April 25 on campus in the Gilliam Center for the Arts Black Box Theater.

Theseus, Duke of Athens, is to marry Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Bottom the weaver and his friends rehearse a play they hope to stage for the wedding celebrations. In the woods outside the city, two young men and two young women sort themselves out into couples—forming first one love triangle, then another. The four run through the forest pursuing each other while Puck the fairy helps his master play a trick on the fairy queen. Revel in a story of order and disorder, reality and appearance, and love and marriage in one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays.

The UVA Wise Theater Department presents Shakespeare’s tireless comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” April 25-27 at 7 p.m. and April 28 at 2 p.m. on campus in the Gilliam Center for the Arts Black Box Theater. Tickets are $10 for the public, or free with presentation of UVA Wise ID. Through partnership with the Pro-Art Association, Pro-Art season ticket holders are also free to attend. The Box Office opens one hour prior to the start of each performance.
