Barker, Lloyd raising funds for Kiwanis

North Carolina singer/songwriter Presley Barker will join Rural Retreat’s own Jim Lloyd on stage for a May 11 fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club of Marion at a Saturday concert at the Lincoln Theatre.

Barker has appeared on the NBC Today Show with Al Roker and was on NBC’s “Little Big Shots” with Steve Harvey. When he was 13 years old, Barker was invited by Country Music Hall of Fame member Ricky Skaggs, to play the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, and he’s worked with Dolly Parton’s producer in Nashville to release new music. His new singles “Middle of Somewhere” and “Time Machine” were released in 2021. He was also on Season 4 of American Idol.

Lloyd is a musical chameleon, singer, old-time banjo master, public radio broadcaster, music educator, bluegrass rhythm guitarist, storyteller, banjo museum curator, and barber from Rural Retreat.

Junior Appalachian Musicians, J.A.M., is an after-school program where children have the opportunity to experience community through the joy of participating in traditional mountain music with master musicians.

The Kiwanis Club of Marion supports the children of Smyth County with children’s programs including nutritious snacks, reading materials, youth camps, scholarships, and children’s medical services.
