Somervell nabs top spots at regional meet

Tess Somervell remained on the right track, putting in another dominating performance for Chilhowie at the Region 1D championships held Tuesday at Eastside High School in Coeburn.

Sommervell hauled home three gold medals, leading the Warrior women to third place team finish with 68 points. The Chilhowie boys finished in eighth place with 22 points.

Somervell took first in the 1600-meter run, clocking in at 5:51.52. She also finished first in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet. Somervell finished first, too, in the 400-meter dash, posting a time of 1:03.24. Somervell was seventh in the 800-meter run, turning in a time of 3:03.54.

Somervell’s teammate Audrey Gilley turned in a time of 1:06.61 in the 400-meters, earning third place.

Gilley finished fourth in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 29.28. She took fifth in the long jump, clearing a 15-foot, 8.5-inch span, and eighth in the triple jump, leaping for 30 feet, 5 inches. Gilley finished seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.05.

Kayman Atwell also had a solid showing at Coeburn, bringing home a silver medal in the 300-meter hurdles, stopping the clock at 51.99. Atwell was seventh in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 30.05. Atwell took 10th in the long jump, clearing a 14-foot, 10.5-inch span. Her 27-foot, 7-inch jump in the triple jump earned Atwell 13th.

Kendra Armstrong led the Northwood girls at the meet, finishing fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 55.21 run. Armstrong was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 19.62.

The Northwood girls finished in 13th place with six points. The Panther boys claimed 14th with four team points.

Aaliya Bennett of Northwood finished 13th in the long jump, leaping a 14-foot, 0.25-inch span. Bennett was 10th in the 100-meters, clocking in at 14.43.

Liz Kestner of Northwood took ninth place in the 3200-meter run, posting a time of 20:01.43.

Chilhowie’s Mady Heath took fifth in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 13.69, and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking in at 1:00.52.

Kendyl Gross of Chilhowie earned fifth in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:44.29. Bella Payan was 13th in the same category, finishing in 3:16.78. Tori Blackwell turned in a time of 3:27.54 to claim 14th.

Chilhowie’s Diamond Miller finished eighth in the 100-meter dash and 10th in the 200-meter dash, posting times of 14.16 and 31.17, respectively.

The Chilhowie girls’ 4×800 relay team took first, finishing in 11:44.98. The 4×100 relay team posting a time of 57.24, earning fifth. The 4×400 team also finished fifth, clocking in at 5:02.50.

The boys’ 4×800 relay team finished third for Chilhowie, clocking in at 9:22.90. The 4×100 team finished in sixth with a time of 47.95. A fifth-place 4×400 team finished at 3:50.30.

Lucas Hubble led the Warrior boys with a silver medal finish in the 800-meter run, clocking in at 2:12.54.

J.T. Moore finished in third for Chilhowie in the 1600-meter run, capturing a time of 5:23.62.

Eli Williams paced the Northwood boys with a fourth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 5-feet, 8 inches. His teammate, Duke Colley, took ninth with a 5-foot, 6-inch leap.
Chilhowie’s Cian Ratcliff finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking in at 47.03.

Bryson Kelly of Chilhowie and Jake Cook of Northwood took 10th and 11th, respectively, in the 3200-meter run. Kelly clocked in at 13:28.36 and Cook at 13:28.39.

Chilhowie’s Bransen Gwinn was seventh in the shot put with a 41-foot, 1.5-inch toss. Jackson Holbrook, also from Chilhowie, finished in 10th with a 38-foot, 11.5-inch heave. Holbrook was 15th in the discus thanks to a 98-foot, 4-inch throw. Aidan Broughman of Chilhowie took ninth in the discus with a 108-foot, 7-inch effort.
