Swimmers compete at Virginia High meet

George Wythe girls finished fourth at a swim meet hosted by Virginia High on Jan. 7, posting 187 team points, just ahead of Marion’s girls with 135 points.

Elizabethton took first in the girls events with 289 team points, followed by Galax with 286. Fort Chiswell finished in 14th with 26 points.

Elizabethton took first in the men’s team race, too, amassing 246.5 points. Carroll County was second with 237.5 points. George Wythe took fourth with 189 points, followed by Marion with 155.5. Rural Retreat finished in 12th with 30 team points.

Together, the George Wythe boys and girls finished in third place.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Marion’s team of Ethan Veselik, Mason Halsey, Dakoda Singleton and Sawyer Jennings finished in second with a time of 2:04.96. The Lady Canes team comprised of Abby Melvin, Addie Umbarger, Kursten Thomas and Laken Foutz finished fourth in the relay with a time of 2:25.96.

In the 200-yard free, George Wythe’s Joseph Puckett secured second with a 2:01.58 finish. Tyler Terry, also from GW, took sixth, touching the wall at 2:28.60. In the women’s 200 free, Marion’s Zoe Sage was eighth, clocking in at 2:48.48. Lydia Collins of George Wythe captured ninth with a time of 2:50.02. Marion’s Laken Foutz finished in 12th with a time of 3:07.60.

Jesse Collins of George Wythe finished third in the men’s 200 yard individual medley with a 2:28.76 finish. Tyler Sickles of Rural Retreat finished in 2:32.80 to earn fourth place.

Lydia Sprano of George Wythe nabbed gold in the women’s 2000 IM with a time of 2:28.12 Marion’s Addie Umbarger took third with a time of 3:07.51.

In the 50-yard free, Marion’s Dakoda Singleton finished third with a 25.91 time. Hayden DeReus of George Wythe took 20th with a 30.51 finish. Mason Halsey of Marin was 29th, clocking in at 34.46, and Brett Buchanan of George Wythe finished in 46.42 to earn 32nd.

George Wythe’s Carrie Sage Dalton took seventh in the 50 yard free, stopping the clock at 29.32. Marion’s Madeline Stewart and Abby Melvin finished in 24th and 27th, respectively. Stewart clocked in at 35.56 and Melvin at 38.35.

Sawyer Jennings of Marion turned in a time of 1:02.93 in the 100 yard fly, taking third. His teammate, Dakoda Singleton, earned fifth with a 1:07.37 finish. Hayden DeReus of GW took seventh, touching the wall at 1:18.16.

In the girls’ 100 fly, Kursten Thomas of Marion took silver with a 1:13.24 finish. George Wythe’s Charla King finished sixth with a time of 1:18.47, and Audry Hurst of Fort Chiswell’s time of 1:29.28 earned her seventh.

In the 100 free, Tyler Sickles of Rural Retreat finished in 59.39, good for fourth place. Ethan Veselik of Marion took fifth with a time of 1:00.59, and Terry Tyler of George Wythe finished eighth with a time of 1:02.98.

Lydia Collins of GW finished 13th in the women’s 100 free, clocking in at 1:16.16. Marion’s Zoe Sage was 15th, posting a time of 1:17.24.

In the 500 free, Joseph Puckett of George Wythe clocked in at 5:36.82, earning second place. His teammate, Brett Buchanan, wound up in seventh with a time of 7:21.61.

Carrie Sage Dalton captured gold for George Wythe in the 500 free, posting a time of 6:03.71.

In the men’s 200 free relay, the GW team of DeReus, Terry, Collins and Puckett finished second with a 1:47.10 race. Marion’s Singleton, Halsey, Jennings and Veselik earned seventh with a time of 1:57.11

The George Wythe team of Collins, King, Dalton and Sprano nabbed gold in the womens 200 free relay, posting  a time of 1:58.95. Marin’s team of Melvin, Umbarger, Foutz and Thomas took fifth, stopping the clock at 2:11.63.

Sawyer Jennings of Marion clocked in at 1:04.71 in the 100-yard backstroke, earning second. Ethan Veselik, also of Marin, finished seventh with a time of 1:10.44.

Kursten Thomas of Marion took fourth in the 100 back, posting a time of 1:13.08. Charla King of GW, finished in 1:13.98, earning fifth. Abby Melvin of Marion carved out a spot in 12th place, touching the wall at 1:23.15. Marion’s Laken Foutz finished in 1:28.07 to earn 17th, and Madeline Stewart of Marion clocked in at 1:44.19 to take 22nd.

In the 100-yard breast, Jesse Collins of George Wythe earned second with a 1:17.75 race. Mason Halsey of Marion clocked in at 1:28.17, good for ninth.

Lydia Sprano won the 100 breast for George Wythe, posting a 1:14.65 finish. Audry Hurst of Fort Chiswell took fifth, clocking in at 1:26.67. Addie Umbarger of Marion posted a time of 1:36.42, claiming 11th place.

The GW boys team of Buchanan, Terry, Collins and Puckett took first in the 400 freestyle relay, posting a finish of 4:06.34. The girls team of Collins, King, Dalton and Sprano finished second, clocking in at 4:25.62.
