Arbor Day Celebration on April 26

The Town of Wytheville will hold the annual Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, April 26, beginning at 10 a.m. at 375 Church Street, in front of Barnett Funeral Home.

After brief proclamation remarks by Wytheville Mayor Beth A. Taylor, the Tree Advisory Committee will plant a tree to commemorate the day. Working with the Town of Wytheville Public Works Department throughout the year, the Tree Advisory Committee develops and implements plans for the care of existing trees and the opportunity to plant new ones.

The Tree Advisory Committee meets quarterly on the second Thursday at 8:30 a.m. If you would like to serve on this committee, contact the Town of Wytheville Clerks Office at 276-223-3349.

Arbor Day, the nation’s tree planting holiday, was first celebrated in 1872. The Arbor Day Foundation was created 100 years later in 1972 to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. For more information about Arbor Day, visit https://www.arborday.org/.

Additionally, Wytheville has for the fifth year been designated as a Tree City USA

community. Starting in 1976, Tree City USA is one of the Arbor Day Foundation’s oldest programs. There are four overarching standards to become such a community: maintaining a tree board or department; having a community tree ordinance; spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry; and celebrating Arbor Day.
