Blevins nabs medalist honors at invitational

Virginia notched its eighth straight victory in the Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational on Sunday at Olde Mill Golf Resort, posting a 38-stroke win over West Virginia to win the 13th playing of the event in late October.

The Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational features top juniors from the Virginia State Golf Association, West Virginia Golf Association, and Maryland State Golf Association in a two-day stroke-play competition. Each state is represented by eight players, and the low six scores from  each of the event’s two rounds are counted toward the final tally.

Virginia shot a collective 24 over par on Saturday and entered Sunday’s second round with a nine-stroke advantage over West Virginia. Virginia shot 16 over on Sunday to distance itself from West Virginia, which shot 45 over. At 40 over, Virginia bested West Virginia by 38 shots and third-place Maryland by 42.

In the first round, Fairfax’s Michael Lee provided Virginia’s best round, a 1-over-par 73. On Sunday, Charlottesville’s Preston Burton and Wytheville’s Benson Blevins each returned even-par rounds of 72 to pace the Virginia squad. Blevins earned individual medalist honors with his 74-72–146 showing, three shots better than Maryland’s Aaron Williams, who shot 77-72–149.

Other members of team Virginia were Midlothian’s JJ Powell, Lovettsville’s Logan Reilly, Richmond’s Garrett Kuhla, Chesapeake’s Xander Goboy, and Virginia Beach’s Miller Carr.
