Canes compete in state swim meet

Marion’s boys team took 10th and the Hurricane girls finished 13th in the state championship Saturday in Christiansburg. The Cane boys finished with 94 team points, while the girls had 52.

Ethan Veselik took ninth in the 200 Individual Medley, completing the race in 2:31.79. On the girl’s side, junior Kursten Thomas finished in 10th place, clocking in at 2:34.16.

Veselik grabbed an eighth-place finish in the 500 free, stopping the clock at 6:06.51. In the girl’s race, Thomas took eighth, too, finishing in 6:12.70.

Freshman Zoe Sage wrapped up a 16th-place finish in the 200 free, posting a time of 2:51.39.

Senior Dakoda Singleton sprinted to an eighth-place finish in the 50 free, clocking in at 24.82. Sarah Blevins, a freshman, finished in 15th in the girls’ 50 free, stopping the clock at 29.89.

In the 100 butterfly, Singleton cruised to sixth place, finishing in 1:02.61. Sophomore Sawyer Jennings came in seventh, touching at 1:02.69.

Addyson Williams, a freshman for the Canes, finished 16th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:34.53.

Sophomore Sawyer Jennings notched the highest finish for a Hurricane, taking third in the 100 backstroke, stopping the watch at 1:02.23.

Marion’s 200 relay team of Veselik, Mason Halsey, Singleton and Jennings finished in 10th place, stopping the watch at 2:03.08. The team of Jennings, Halsey, Veselik and Singleton took 13th in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:52.90.

The girls team finished in 2:24.37. The group made up of Abby Melvin, Umbarger, Thomas and Blevins took 11th. The Marion team of Blevins, Sofie May, Umbarger and Laken Foutz finishe din 12th in the 200 free relay, clocking in at 2:04.85. The 400 free relay team of Thomas, Foutz, Melvin and Sage finished in 13th with a time of 4:57.87.
