Buck, a German shepherd certified in tracking and narcotics detection and a K-9 officer with the Christiansburg Police Department died over the weekend.
The department said the cause of death was liver failure from an underlying health issue.
Born May 1, 2016, Buck had worked with the Christiansburg Police Department and his partner, Officer Chad Eversole, for the past 3 and a half years.
The department said that Buck was focused and dedicated to his work but always found time to make friends in the community, take part in demonstrations at schools and civic groups and put a smile on the faces of the people he met.
Eversole was an officer with the Wytheville Police Department for several years.
