Crash leaves Chilhowie resident dead

A Monday morning crash left a 59-year-old dead and sent a 50-year-old to the hospital, state police said.

Officials reported on Friday that the Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle wreck at the intersections of state routes 605 and 600 in Smyth County at 9:46 a.m. on Feb. 21.

A 2002 Ford Taurus driving west on state Route 605 was struck by a 2021 2500 Ram pickup coming southbound through the intersection. The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to run off the road.

The Ford’s driver, William A. Mason, 50, of Chilhowie was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Police report he was not wearing a seat belt. A passenger in the car, Natalie L. O’Neal, 59, of Chilhowie died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Dodge, Hunter W. Fullen, 36, of Glade Spring was uninjured in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt.

Mason was charged with failure to yield the right of way.

The crash remains under investigation.
