Emory football players earn honors

The Emory & Henry College Football Team has seen several of its members named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware. The outlet has recognized four E&H players for a total of five team of the week awards over the course of the Wasps’ regular season.
Sophomore running back Grayson Overstreet and sophomore defensive lineman Jay Swegheimer were named to the Team of the Week on Friday, March 5 for all games played in the month of February.
In the team’s 17-0 season-opening win at Ferrum on Feb. 26, Overstreet rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries, outgaining the entire Panther offense. For his efforts, he was named the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week. Defensively, Swegheimer led the team with 3.5 sacks for 34 yards and a total of five tackles on the game.
Following the Wasps’ 47-6 drubbing of Guilford College on Friday, March 12, E&H earned three spots on the most-recent Team of the Week. Senior quarterback Hunter Taylor, junior linebacker Ivan Phillips and Swegheimer were each recognized for their performance over the Quakers.
Taylor threw for two touchdowns on 11-for-17 passing for 246 yards and called his own number six times on the afternoon for 36 rushing yards and another score on his way to ODAC Offensive Player of the Week laurels. Phillips was honored for his performance on special teams as he recovered a blocked extra point and returned it 90 yards for a defensive two-point conversion. Swegheimer lived in the GC backfield making four of his six tackles behind the line of scrimmage including three sacks. He also broke up a pass and added a pair of quarterback hurries.
With Washington and Lee University ‘opting-out’ of competition this spring, Emory & Henry (3-0, 3-0 ODAC) has completed its regular season slate and now awaits the announcement of the pairings for the ODAC Championship and “crossover” games to be played on Friday, April 2.
