First responders have busy week in Marion

Last week was a busy one for Marion first responders, with two shooting incidents and a collision that damaged a portion of a downtown building.

Crews were sent to 517 N. main to Dr. Heith Miller’s Marion Chiropractic Center for an early morning single-vehicle collision into the corner of the building.

Some 60 years ago, the building in question was where the formula for Mountain Dew was invented.

Police arrested the 31-year-old driver of the truck, Nika Compton, charging her with reckless driving and DUID.

Compton also had an outstanding warrant for fail to appear on a previous charge.  The incident remains under investigation, and the building has been secured by the property owner pending repairs.

The adjacent Happy’s building was destroyed in a similar crash a few years ago, and the King Bridge in between these two buildings was taken out of service by two consecutive vehicle crashes.

Later, Marion Police were called to the Marion Farmers Market to a report of a dispute ending in a student.

One person was found at the market, suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Marion Fire/EMS treated the victim, who was taken for further treatment via helicopter.

The suspect, 19-year-old Andrew Douglas Hickman fled the scene initially, but was soon apprehended by Marion police.

The Marion PD also responded to a shooting incident in the area of 100 S. Park St. The suspects fled out of the county.
