George Wythe topples Fort Chiswell

The Maroons meant business Thursday night, handing in-county, in-district Fort Chiswell an 0-2 record on the season with a 14-7 loss.

George Wythe was quiet in the first half, falling behind 0-7 after Fort Chiswell’s Logan Selfe scored on a 95-yard run after an interception.

The Fort went into the break nursing a 7-0 lead.

George Wythe made it up and then some in the third and fourth stanzas. Freshman Brayden Rainey, in the third, scored a 60-yard touchdown after a blocked punt return. Sophomore Tandom Smith gave the go-ahead to GW in the fourth, scoring on a one-yard plunge.

Luke Jollay legged out 86 yards for the Maroons on 22 carries. Leyton Fowler churned up 69 yards on 20 carries for George Wythe.

The Pioneers had just 71 yards of total offense, more than half of that from Ezra Varney, who ran for 41 yards.
