Grayson crowns news wrestling state champ

Grayson County crowned a brand new state champ over the weekend at the girls wrestling state tournament.

Isabella Hill battled her way through a loaded bracket, cruising to the 145-pound finals.

In her opening match, Hill pinned Potomac Falls’ Codi Turner in just 21 seconds. She followed that with a 16-0 tech fall win over Mikayla Turner of Meridian. In the quarterfinals, Hill stuck Savanah Atkinson of J.R. Tucker. She then notched a first-period pinfall win over Ciyanna Okocha of Louisa County.

In the finals, Hill struck gold with a hotly contested 5-4 win over Hana Coutts of Oakton.

Hill led a contingent of grapplers from the Blue Devils.

At 132 pounds, Danielle Burkhardt opened her tourney with a pinfall loss to Amaya Shook of Millbrook. In the consolations, Burkhardt struck back with a pin over Honey Streightiff of Eastern View before losing by pin to Alexandria City’s Hannah Meehan.

Ashlyn Wilson lost her opening match at 138 pounds by pin to Aubrey Goble of Fairfax. Wilson battled back in the consi rounds, picking up a pair of pins over Abby Stone of Bath County and Jessica Butler of Windsor before ending her tournament with a 7-3 loss to King George’s Delaney Brown.

Lucy Kate Cherry fell by pinfall to Eleanore Sassi of Randolph-Henry before bouncing back with a pin over Justice’s Dayana Meruvia. Faith Kiefer of Jefferson Forest ended Cherry’s run with a pinfall loss.

At 185 pounds, Lizbeth Lopez fell by pins to Sophia Sharp of Fairfax and Hazel Garrett of Lebanon.

Fort Chiswell also sent a wrestler to the state tournament.

Olivia Scott opened her bid at 107 pounds with a pinfall win over Nicole Barahona of Wakefield. Scott then dropped a 5-0 decision to Chloe Simmons of Tunstall and fell by pinfall to Maddison Vaden of Culpeper.
