Hungry Mother center renovated

Hungry Mother State Park’s Discovery Center recently underwent its first renovation since opening in 1999.

The center’s display contains taxidermy animals, plants and three live critters.

Work began in December 2019, when the Garden Club of Virginia, working with Friends of Hungry Mother State Park, put in a grant application and was awarded a $5,000 2020 Centennial Project grant. Construction on the display began in October 2020 and was finished in April.

“The animal display is a huge hit with our guests. It hadn’t been changed since the center was built in 1999, so we felt it needed to be refreshed,” said Chief Ranger of Visitor Experience Tanya Hall. “Also, our turtle and hellbender salamander were both growing, so we wanted to provide better habitats for each of them.”

The live animals now have larger tanks and more space to move.

The Discovery Center display is open to the public.
