Indians stop Fort Chiswell in season opener

The Indians handled a tough Fort Chiswell crew, keeping the hard-charging Pioneers out of the end zone on Friday night.

Carter Rouse kicked off the festivities in the first quarter, scoring on a 52-yard punt return for Rural Retreat, giving the Indians a 6-0 lead.

The Fort rebounded in the second as Larson Edmonds hit Reed Dunford on a 20-yard touchdown pass to go ahead 7-6. It was the last time the Rural Reatreat defense would let the Pioneer into the end zone.

Later in the second quarter, Rural Retreat’s Kaiden Atkinson scored off a 21-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Roberts to go ahead 12-7.

The Indians held on the rest of the way to claim the non-district, in-county victory.

Ezra Varney pounded out 85 yards on the ground for Fort Chiswell, and Ely Blevins put up 58 rushing yards for the Indians.
