Kayaking, leaf-peeping on the menu at Hungry Mother

It’s the beginning of fall, so the leaves are mostly green across the Commonwealth, but there are hints of color in many areas. As the weather changes, we will see more vibrant colors as we get further into the season. Virginia State Parks are the perfect place to visit this time of year because they offer a variety of fall-themed activities and excellent natural beauty.

Whatever adventure you decide on, be sure to share your Virginia State Park photos on social media by using the hashtag #VaStateParks and #FallinVirginia to be part of the online conversation.

The peak fall foliage period for the parks in our western region is right around the corner. Currently, you’ll still see a lot of green, especially in the woods, but it’s not as vibrant as usual, which is a good sign. You may even start to notice some leaves turning yellow.

Enjoy bird watching, hiking, biking or have a camping adventure! Park programs are available to help connect you to nature. Be sure to share your fall photos from your adventures on social media using the hashtags #VaStateParks and #FallinVirginia to be part of the online conversation.
As you come into Hungry Mother State Park, you’ll see a lot of yellows and slight oranges shining through. Once you’re in the park, keep an eye out for maples already showing their fall colors. Overall, you’ll see more yellow leaves in the park than orange or red.

Best place to view: Right now, the best place to view is at the spillway and along the front side of the Lake Trail.
