Marion honors Greatest Generation on Aug. 14 with free event

“Spirit of ‘45” was designated as an annual national day honoring America’s Greatest Generation by Congress in 2010.  The following year, the Town of Marion and Marion VFW 4667 was the first in Virginia to join the national commemoration – before the Commonwealth of Virginia even joined in.

“Always the second Sunday in August, “Spirit of ‘45” Day is a time to pause to remember those who sacrificed so much to build our great nation,” said Marion Mayor David Helms.  “And we are delighted to partner with our VFW to continue this tradition. We’ve lost so many of our WWII veterans, and this is a time for us to honor them and their families that also sacrificed so much.”

The 11th annual Marion “Spirit of ‘45” Day Commemoration is set for Sunday, Aug. 14, at 3 p.m. at the Lincoln Theatre.  Rev. John Graham will serve as guest speaker, and Sharon Buchanan, Bill Schermer, and Deborah Montgomery will provide music.

Admission is free.  The Marion Spirit of ’45 Commemoration is Sunday, Aug. 14 at 3 pm. at the historic Lincoln Theatre.
