Memorial Day brings fast laps to Wythe Raceway

Memorial Day weekend always has a huge line up for Wythe Raceway.

This one was no different as the Food Country American All-Star Late Models took 50 trips around the half-mile clay oval.

Justin Tate celebrates second place in the UCAR event.

With  packed stands and a crowded infield, Dillon Brown of Gaffney, South Carolina, swept night two of Mayhem in the Mountains. Brown qualified on the pole, won the dash, led all 50 laps, and went home $5,000 richer!

As always the barn-burner of the night Shirley’s Market Super Street was one to watch.

With a big field of cars they took to the banks to battle for position. Keith Griffiths of Sugar Grove and David Peeples of Rural Retreat ran door-to-door, arguing over the first-place position for the first 12 laps.

Jerry Dillow of Bluefield, West Virginia, took a spin from fourth place up onto the front stretch wall as a battle was inspiring between Dillow, Randy Taylor of Chilhowie and Eddie Bentley of Sugar Grove. Dillow was able to continue after only a flat and the restart saw Griffiths pull away for the lead. With hard running all over the track you weren’t sure where to watch but in the end Griffiths took home the win followed by Peeples, Michael Deskins of Tazewell, Dillow, Bentley, Dale Hancock of Atkins and Taylor for the top seven.

Carquest Wythe Eye Modifieds also ran for a big dollar money and a 25-lap feature.

The show was all but taken over by Jeff Parsons, a North Carolina driver.

Morgan Widener of Marion and J.R. Davis of Rural Retreat did their best to pass Parsons to no avail. With a few cautions in the mix Brandon Umberger of Rural Retreat was able to work his way back through the field after some wiring issues. Parson claimed the victory followed by  Widener, Davis, Jasper Hooker, and Umberger for the top five.

The men of Randy’s Tire Shop Pro Mini were the first to the track for the night and with smooth running and only one small spin Kevin Atwell of Rural Retreat took home the checkered followed by Travis Harden of Marion and Tanner Cook of Wytheville.

Kayla Surber, a Sugar Grove native, took home the win for the UCAR division. With the drivers running a flawless run it was Justin Tate, Daniel Tate of Rural Retreat and Ryan Shelton of Sugar Grove to round out the top four.
