Gail Maloyed Campbell

Gail Maloyed Campbell, 79, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at home.

Campbell was born in West Virginia on June 29, 1944. She concluded a career spanning over 40-plus years in the accounting department of the SWVA Mental Health Institute in Marion before retiring. Her dedication to her family was unwavering, and she treasured the moments spent with them. Campbell took particular delight in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. An enthusiastic gardener, she found joy in tending to her flowers. Above all, she will be fondly remembered as the Queen of Hallmark, conscientiously ensuring that cards were sent to all her family, friends, and loved ones.

She is preceded in death by her parents George Wright and Ruby Allison Crabtree Maloyed; her husband of 57 years, John “Pete” Campbell; brothers Doug Maloyed, Lowell Maloyed and J.W. Maloyed; sister Joy Hicks; and sister and brother-in-law Margert Sharitz and husband, Ralph.

Campbell is survived by her three children Kelly Campbell and wife, Cindy, Craig Campbell and Missy, and Allison Carter and husband, Willie; brother Ron Maloyed and wife, Dottie; grandchildren Sarah Lewis and husband, Dylan, Autumn Dalton and husband, Zac, Taloni Russell and husband, James, Kellen Campbell and wife, Sarah, Ty Campbell, Tanner Campbell, Angel Grubb and husband, Blaine, and Shay Campbell; great-grandchildren Avery and William Dalton, Amilya Campbell, Sawyer Russell, Presley Grubb, and two on the way; her puppy companion Bo; and several nieces and nephews.

William Jesse Choate

William Jesse Choate, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2024, at Mountain Laurel Rehab & Nursing, Rural Retreat.

Choate was a true servant with a love for God, family, country and his community. Married to the love of his life and a true partner, Jesse and Carol made the lives of everyone around them better. From their time with the Sugar Grove Fire Department and Lifesaving Crew, Rye Valley Ruritan, Sugar Grove Young Farmers, his love of fellowship, worship and leadership as a trustee for Elizabeth Methodist Church and his 33 years of service to the Smyth County School Board with 18 years as chairman. Choate had a way of putting people at ease as he worked to improve the educational system for the children, teachers, support staff and administrators of the Smyth County School System. Choate was one of a kind, who absolutely made a difference and leaves a wonderful legacy for many generations to come.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Laton Edward and Marie Welch Choate; brothers, Eddie Choate and Ronnie Choate; grandparents, I.C. Choate and Bertha Choate.

Choate is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol Surber Choate of Sugar Grove; sisters-in-law, Barbara Choate of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, and Rosalie Choate of East Bend, North Carolina; special nieces, Christina Blakely of Madison, Alabama, Jessica Choate of Hamptonville, North Carolina, and Julia DeLizzio of Sterling, Virginia; and many special cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 17, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Elizabeth Methodist Church, 574 Virginia Highlander Road, Sugar Grove VA 24375. Memorial services will begin at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Dixon officiating. Burial will be private.

Douglas Wayne “Nink” Corvin

Douglas Wayne “Nink” Corvin, 61 of Wytheville died Monday, Jan. 29, 2024.

He was born in Wytheville on Jan. 8, 1963 to the late Dickie and Linda Burse Corvin. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Ann “Sissy” Corvin Hensley. Corvin was an employee of Longwood Elastomers WABTEC.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Martha Jane Corvin of Wytheville; son, Landon Corvin of Wytheville; two nieces, Chelsey Hensley of Rural Retreat and Amanda and Chad Holston of Max Meadows; two nephews, Will and Marissa Hensley of Pulaski and Adam Mabry of Ivanhoe; and special pets, Baby and Tigger.

Burial was in West End Cemetery.

Eleanor Atwell Davis

Eleanor Atwell Davis, 87, of Bland died Monday, Feb. 5, 2024.

Born Nov. 11, 1936, in Bland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas McGinnis Davis and Virginia Tickle Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John Stewart Atwell, infant son Adrian Stewart Atwell, daughter Deborah Atwell Brown.

She was a proud member of Walkers Creek Baptist Church

Survivors include her son John Michael Atwell and wife, Beverley; daughter Angela Atwell and Roy Lee Nuckolls of Marion; grandchildren Shelley Shelton, Adrianne Richards, Damian Cox, Megan Atwell and Michaela Atwell; and great-grandchildren Juni Wood and Kaiden Cox.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at Bland Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Leslie officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis Cemetery.

Mildred Louise Gravley Dunford

Mildred Louise Gravley Dunford, 85, of Wytheville died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024.

She was born Jan. 30, 1939, in Wythe County, daughter of the late John Edgar and Mittie Crigger Gravley. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Wayne Dunford and four brothers.

Survivors include her husband, John Edward Dunford; son, Tim Dunford and wife, Penny, of Barren Springs; two daughters, Sandy Viars and husband, Timmy, and Robin McPeak, all of Max Meadows; two sisters, Til Alderman of Barren Springs and Joann Davis of Bassett, Virginia; a brother, James “Tooter” Gravley of Wytheville; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many extended family and friends.

Lola Jean Cutts Foster

Lola Jean Cutts Foster, 93, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2024, at English Meadows Assisted Living in Abingdon.

She was born in Vance County, North Carolina, on Dec. 12, 1930 to Robert Leonard Cutts and Hazel Daniel Cutts.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her stepfather, Alfred Ray Jensen and her husband of 66 years, John E. Foster.

Foster is survived by her two sons, Brent Foster and wife, Carolyn, and Scott Foster and wife, Tammi, all of Chilhowie; grandchildren Zac Foster and wife, Michelle, Emily Corvin and husband, Ryan, Matthew Foster, Eden Small and husband, Christian, and Mia Foster; great-grandchildren, Jordyn and Brady Foster, Levi, Luke and Maverick Corvin.

Most of Jean’s childhood days were spent living in Keysville, Virginia. She spoke often about her life there, sharing many stories of growing up with her grandparents, aunts and uncles. She settled in Chilhowie in the 1960’s where she and John owned and operated Greever’s Drug Store Inc. for 30-plus years.

Foster was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and served in many ministries throughout her years there. She loved her flower gardens and playing hide and seek with the grandchildren along with hosting many tea parties for them. Grandma will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Williams Funeral Home in Chilhowie with son, the Rev. Scott Foster officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at the Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery in Keysville.

Garry Hasley

Garry Hasley, 65, of Wytheville died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2024.

He was born Jan. 1, 1959, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Edward E. and Mary Webb Hasley. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Sherron Dean; two sisters-in-law, Janet Hasley and Marie Hasley; a nephew, Steven Wayne Hasley and a niece, Sheila Jordon.

Hasley had a heart for helping others. He loved to cook and spend time with his family. He enjoyed listening to music, especially Elvis Presley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his daughter, Vanessa Hasley Collins; two grandchildren; sister, Vivian Dunford; three brothers, Charles Wayne Hasley, Steven Hasley and Larry Hasley; niece, Amanda Hasley and nephews, Levi Dunford, KW Dean, Carter and Carson; and many extended family and friends.

Burial was in Bethany Community Church Cemetery.

Nancy Louise Hatcher

Nancy Louise Hatcher, 67, of Bland died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024.

Born March 8, 1956, in Eugene, Oregon, she was the daughter of the late Vance Leon Lambert Sr. and Ivy Jean Wigley Lambert.

She liked to paint, sing and she loved “Wheel of Fortune.” She enjoyed playing board games and cookouts with her family. She loved to go hunting, fishing and four wheeling; she loved the outdoors.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband. Lindell Arland Hatcher. and one sister, Susan Lambert Odell.

Survivors include her daughter, Amy Barron and husband, Cody, of Bland: two stepchildren, Gregory Hatcher and Corey Justin Hatcher of Union, West Virginia; one brother, Vance Leon Lambert Jr. of Bland; two sisters, Valerie Lambert Hatcher and husband, Kevin, of Bland and Audrey Jean Lambert of Bland; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Burial was at Old Bethel Cemetery in Ceres. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Stacy “Cowboy” Lee McAllister

Stacy “Cowboy” Lee McAllister, 52, of Rural Retreat died Jan. 29, 2024.

He was born March 20, 1971. He was preceded in death by his mother Joyce Cox, his father Dennis McAllister.

McAllister grew up enjoying the outdoors. Shooting bows, hunting and fishing. He liked playing horse shoes while hanging with his friends. He was quite the comedian that he could make anyone laugh no matter the situation.

McAllister is survived by his son, Chad McAllister; daughter Kayla McAllister; grandson Aiden Grubb; stepfather James Cox; stepmother Louis McAllister; four brothers; two sisters; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Allison and “Little” Mike Holston, and Chris Hampton.

Celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Richard Frank Pakacki

Richard Frank Pakacki, 74, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, West Virginia.

Pakacki was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Adam Pakacki Sr. and Ada May Wilburn Pakacki. Along with his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brothers Adam Pakacki Jr., Robert Pakacki Sr., David Pakacki, and Joseph Pakacki Sr.; and a great=granddaughter Sarah.

Pakacki, a diligent individual, dedicated more than five decades to managing his own construction enterprise, MAP Construction. Throughout this extensive period, he tirelessly erected numerous houses across the Maryland region, showcasing his creativity and a keen appreciation for the intrinsic value in everything. In addition to his construction pursuits, Pakacki cultivated a passion for collecting, amassing an assortment of guns and vintage cars. Beyond his professional and collecting endeavors, he found enjoyment in attending auto auctions, purchasing vehicles to refurbish and sell. Pakacki cherished moments spent with his family, relishing the company, and indulging in his love for westerns. Above all, he remained unwaveringly committed to fulfilling his roles as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Angelina Elizamay Pakacki; four children, Donald Pakacki Sr. and wife, Misty, Joseph Michael Pakacki, Richard Pakacki Sr. and wife, Kimberly, and Adabella Pakacki; two sisters, Catherine Ridgely and Ada “Cookie” Buckheight; grandchildren D.J., Elizabeth, Cassidy, Megan, Michael, Richard, Elina and Damion; great-grandchildren Elijah, Brooklynn, Nova, Shelby, Emma, Seth, Paisley, Jamin, Ainsley, Brason, and one on the way; and several nieces, nephews, and a special cousin Charles.

Timothy Ray “TR” Polk Jr.

Timothy Ray “TR” Polk Jr. died Monday, Jan. 29, 2024.

Polk was proceeded in death by his mother, Sherry Polk; his little sister, Raylee Polk and grandparents, Ballard and Evelyn Polk and Kevin Privett.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Timothy and Candace Polk; three brothers, Darrell Privett, Curtis Hill and Elijah Polk; one sister, Evelyn Grace Polk; maternal grandmother, Barbara Privett; and step-grandparents, Newton and Kathy Miller.

Wayne Thomas Powers

Wayne Thomas Powers, 89, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at Smyth County Community Hospital.

Powers was born in Smyth County to the late Carl Dewey Powers and Lula Mae Martin Powers and was preceded in death by his siblings, Georgia Matney, Charmie Winebarger, Shirley VanKrey, Maxine Artz, Linda Shumate, Themla Joyce Powers and Harold Martin.

Powers was a kind loving person that loved to garden, visiting with family and friends and taking care of his yard. He was a member of the Grosses Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include siblings, Carol Keever, Dorothy “Dot” Walters, Beulah “Kathy” Zelsnack, Carl “Don” Powers, John “Ron” Powers and Theresa Thomas; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Mary Davis Rosenbaum

Mary Davis Rosenbaum, 89, of Wytheville died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024.

She was the daughter of the late John Henry and Rosa Lee Hall Davis. Rosenbaum was preceded in death by her husband, Billie D. Rosenbaum Sr. and son, Johnnie Lee Rosenbaum. She was a member of the Homeland Trio.

Rosenbaum is survived by son, Billie D. Rosenbaum Jr. and Michelle Pack of Wytheville; granddaughter and spouse, Heather Leighann and Josh Talley of Elon, North Carolina; great-grandson, Brock Talley of Elon; brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Ann Davis of Wytheville; sister Sibbie Akers of Piney; special nephew, Dwayne Rosenbaum of Wytheville; niece, Caryoln Sharitz of Ohio; nephew, David Davis of Maryland; and other nieces and nephews.

Eva Jane Stanley

Eva Jane Stanley, 85, died Jan. 29, 2024, at Mountain City Care Center.

Stanley was born Aug. 17, 1938 to the late Lillard and Mary Combs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Brooks and Carl Stanley; daughter, Kathy Testerman; grandson Chris Brooks; and brothers David Combs and William Combs.

Stanley was giving and caring; she would give her last penny to someone in need. She was a great cook and was known for her biscuits and gravy. She loved to watch Days of Our Lives and enjoyed talking on the phone. She was a member of Ackerson Creek Church of Christ for many years.

Survivors include her son, Michael Brooks and wife, Brenda; granddaughter, Tonia Jones and husband, Chris; great-grandson, Cash Jones; brother, Fred Combs; stepchildren, Steve Stanley and wife, Kim, Jerry Stanley and wife, Perriann, and Tony Stanley and wife, Charmin; step-grandchildren Faye Baker, Justin Stanley, Tanieka Halberg, Leslie Forrester, Ashley James, Katie Stanley, Kayla Stanley and Jessica Jupin; several step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Delmar Stanley and wife, Evelyn.

Paul Hutchins Wilgus

Paul Hutchins Wilgus, 64, of Rural Retreat died Monday, Feb. 5, 2024.

He was born Aug. 3, 1959, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of the late Louis Paul Wilgus and Evelyn Huston Puttere. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Scott Wilgus.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Ashley Wilgus of New Port Richey, Florida; three grandchildren, Christopher Silvestro, Chase Silvestro and Gianna Wilgus; a sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Daniel Ball of Maryville, Tennessee; a brother, Terry Wilgus and partner David of Northport, Florida; a niece and nephew; special friend, Pete Gouvitsas; and many extended family and friends.
