John William Burnett

John William Burnett, 62, died Monday, Nov, 13, 2023, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.

Burnett was born in Wilmington, Delaware, to the late Elmer Clifton Burnett and Velma Elizabeth Allison Burnett and was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary Lee Burnett and Michael Clifton Burnett. He retired from Mayville Engineering in Atkins and was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Leigh Ann Burnett; and two sisters, Judy King and Ralph King of Rural Retreat and Patsy Akers and Charles King of Dublin.

Martha Jane Bane Clendenen

Martha Jane Bane Clendenen was born in Bristol, Virginia, on April 30, 1925, to James Stephenson Bane and Katherine Pickle Bane.  She grew up on Windsor Avenue and belonged to Anderson Street United Methodist Church.  After graduating from Tennessee High School in 1943, she earned her AB degree from Virginia Intermont College.

She married Jim Clendenen on June 5, 1948. They moved to Glade Spring in 1951, where she spent the remainder of her life. Clendenen served as Treasurer and Clerk for the Town of Glade Spring for many years. She was also employed by Washington County Schools, teaching at Wallace High School and Liberty Hall Elementary.

Clendenen became a member of Byars Cobbs United Methodist Church in 1951, where she was active in United Methodist Women, the Young Adult Sunday School Class, Parsonage Committee and Bible Study groups.

     During the 1950’s she advocated for Bible Education in the schools, and worked as a booster for the construction of Patrick Henry High School and its first marching band.

Clendenen was known for her joy in meeting the needs of people, and taking care of both the old and the young. She spent much of her energy babysitting her grandchildren and her first great-grandchild.

     In her later years, Clendenen served as a member of The Eleven Club, and the Town Square Committee.

     Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Jim Clendenen; sister, Ann Catherine Gillespie; brother-in-law, Lester Gillespie; brother, Jim Bane; sister-in-law, Pearl Bane; daughter-in-law, Diane Clendenen.

     Survivors include son, Spenny Clendenen; daughter Cathy Hutton (Bill); grandchildren Dr. Bob Hutton, Martha Quirarte (Luis), Kimberly Franklin (Denny), Jon Clendenen (Katie) and Rachel Cobb (Ryan); great-grandchildren Juda Quirarte, Chen Quirarte, Lilly Cobb, Hannah Cobb, Abel Quirarte, Bonnie Quirarte, Sophia Franklin, Sydney Clendenen and Millie Clendenen; and two nieces, two nephews, and many great-nephews and great-nieces.

     The family appreciates devoted caregivers Kim Williams, Lisa Perrigan and the Quirarte family; and special nurses Christie Huff, Christina Kilby and Dawn Blevins.

     The funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Paul Griffith, will be held at noon on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Byars Cobbs United Methodist Church, Glade Spring. Visitation will be held in the fellowship hall of the church beginning at 11 a.m. Burial at Rose Lawn Cemetery will follow the funeral service.

Lewis Franklin Echols Sr.

Lewis Franklin Echols Sr., 84, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2023, at his home in Rich Valley.

Echols was born in Smyth County to the late Marvin and Evie Havens Echols. He was preceded in death by brothers Joe Echols and Gene Echols; and sisters Sis Sawyers, Mary Cregger, Catherine Strouth and Nancy Gillespie.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Echols; sons Lewis Franklin Echols Jr. and Chris Echols; brother Lee Echols and wife, Edith; sister-in-law Arbutus Echols; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard Adam “Wormie” Hamm

Richard Adam “Wormie” Hamm, 25, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2023.

Hamm was a happy-go-lucky guy who made friends easily wherever he was. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them – especially when he could be outdoors. When he wasn’t with friends or family, he enjoyed working at Ingles in Marion. Hamm will be missed by all who knew and loved his kind and gentle way.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Della Grubb; and great-great-aunt, Zoreda Moore.

He is survived by his mother, Heather Herron (Shane) of Kingsport, Tennessee; sisters Jasmine Hamm and Sabella Herron, both of Kingsport; brothers Tyler Hamm of Kingsport and Cameron Herron of Gate City, Virginia; grandparents “Grammie” Candy Wilson and “Papaw” Cecil Grubb Jr.; aunt Mindy Grubb; uncles Charlie Grubb and Nicholas Grubb; and nieces and nephews, Aqua, Arrow and Tucker Hamm, Atlas and Remington Herron.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion. Family and friends are asked to meet at Fraziers’ Seaver-Brown at 10:15 a.m. for procession to the cemetery.

Rabon M. Hutton

Rabon M. Hutton, 82, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.

He was born in Smyth County to the late Carmon Hutton and Lillian Gallimore Hutton and was preceded in death by his brothers, Basil Hutton and Alton Hutton. Hutton retired from Department of Corrections with more than 25 years of service.  He was a member of the Church of Christ in Atkins and enjoyed NASCAR.

Survivors include, his wife, Barbara S. Hutton; children Bart Hutton and wife, Dana, and Mark Hutton; grandchildren Bayne Hutton and Makinzie Hutton; sisters Aloma Walton, Sharon Quesenberry and Velda Frye; brother, Conway Hutton; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Lewis Roberts

Charles Lewis Roberts, 70, of Chilhowie died Friday, Nov. 10, 2023, at his residence.

Roberts was born Feb. 5, 1953, a son of the late Luther and Corda Dove Walker Robets. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Roberts enjoyed spending time with his family, being outdoors and fishing.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

Survivors include his wife of five years, Carol Jean Roberts; five sons, Jason Roberts and Rachel, Matthew Roberts and Sarah, Cory Roberts and Breanna, Joe Cregger and Nancy and Willie Cregger and JoAnn; one daughter, Missy Armstrong and Robert; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Stella Lester and Tommy; special nephew Russell Roberts; and several additional nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Roberts Cemetery at Ikes Fork, West Virginia.

Wayne Alexander Rogers

Wayne Alexander Rogers, 71, died Nov. 10, 2023, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
