Pioneers claim regional crown

The Pioneers became the pride of Wythe County on Saturday, Feb. 25.

During a hard-fought regional finals at Virginia Tech’s Cassell Coliseum, the Lady Pioneers squeezed past the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs 52-50, capturing the Class 1, Region C girls’ crown.

The Fort Chiswell girls kicked off their regional bid with a huge showing over Narrows on Tuesday, whipping the Green Wave 66-42.

On Friday, the FC crew picked off Parry McCluer 54-50, holding off a Fighting Blues comeback bid in the final frame.

Sophomore Blair Jackson’s been a force to be reckoned with on the court this season, leading a young Fort Chiswell team in several categories.

Jackson is averaging 20.9 points per game this season, up from the 12.8 she averaged as a freshman. She’s also doubled her rebounds per game average from 6.3 last season to 3.4 this year. So far in her career, Jackson has netted 854 points, including 62 three-pointers.

Fellow sophomore Kara King is also proving troublesome for opponents, averaging 12.5 points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game and 3.1 steals per game. King has piled up 300 points so far this year.
