The Sweet Delilah Swim Club opens at WCC

“The faster we swim, the sooner we win!” That is the motto for The Sweet Delilah Swim Club by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten. Playing at Wytheville Community College April 1, 2, 8, and 9 at 7:30 p.m., this touching comedy features five women whose lifelong friendship began on their college swim team.

The ladies get together for a girls’ weekend at the Outer Banks every summer. We meet them twenty-two years after their college graduation and follow the ups and downs of their relationships over the next thirty-three years. First is Sheree (played by Frances Moore), former team captain, doing her best to keep her friends and her life on schedule. Next is Lexi (Holly Montgomery), desperate to keep time from spoiling her good looks and her chance to snare the next perfect partner. Dinah (Courtney Pendleton) is a top flight lawyer and uses her cutting wit to advantage in both the courtroom and the living room. Vernadette (Barbara Brown) leads a life best described by sad country songs, and Jeri Neal (Tina Edwards)—well, Jeri Neal is in a nunnery.

Why The Sweet Delilah Swim Club? “We like Jones, Hope, and Wooten and we like to laugh,” says director Janice Pryor. “Fellow director Robert Burnett and I have produced three of their comedies so far, and audiences love them. This one has the added advantage of pulling just a little bit at the heartstrings. Laughter and tears make a great combination.”

All of the action takes place at the beach house, created by set designer Roger Dean Grubb. Making sure cast and set are always visible to the audience is lighting designer Coyote Edwards. Costumer Tina Edwards coordinates clothing and wigs to fit each character’s personality, and Denita Burnett manages the box office.

All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in Snyder Auditorium of Grayson Hall on the WCC Wytheville Campus. Ticket prices are $8 for general admission, $7 for senior citizens and students (any age, any school), and free for WCC students with ID.

Tickets will be available at the box office in the Johnson Lobby (adjacent to the Snyder Auditorium), which opens thirty minutes before each performance. Tickets may also be reserved by calling 276-223-4795 or emailing [email protected]. For additional information or questions about this performance, please check the WCC Theatre Facebook page.
