Vandals damage Spiller playground

Vandals caused some serious trouble at Spiller Elementary School playground over the weekend.

Wytheville Police said three heavy picnic tables inside the fenced and locked playground were damaged, noting that the substantial weight of the tables point to teenagers or adults – not children. Photos show tables moved around and at least two where the metal tops were bent to broken.

The police said the playground is for the children to use during school hours and it is not a public park. The playground equipment at tables were bought by the Spiller Parent Teacher Association with money from donations and fundraisers.

The police department said the playground is off-limits to the general public and anyone found on school property who is not an invited guest will be charged with trespassing.

Wythe County School Resource Officers are currently investigating this crime. Any information can be called into the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office (276)223-6000 or you can email your tips to [email protected] .

Wytheville Police will be doing extra patrols around Spiller Elementary after hours and on the weekends.
