Wasp women down Southern Wesleyan on basketball court

The Emory & Henry College Women’s Basketball Team (1-0) got the 2023-24 campaign started with a convincing 74-51 win over Southern Wesleyan University (0-1) in a South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge Friday evening. The event is being hosted by Belmont Abbey College.

The Wasps jumped out to a 10-3 lead at the 5:07 mark of the first quarter thanks in part to back-to-back baskets by sophomore forward Breanna Yarber of Meadowview. The two squads went back and forth through the rest of the period with E&H leading, 17-12, through 10 minutes of action.
SWU closed the gap to 17-15 with the first three points of the second, but Emory & Henry responded with a 14-6 run to take a 31-21 advantage midway through the frame. The Warriors scored five in a row to close the gap to 31-26 but the Wasps responded with the final five of the half to go into the locker room up 36-26.
Returning to action, Southern Wesleyan scored six of the first nine points of the third to get within seven (39-32), but a 14-6 run by E&H stretched the margin to 53-38 with one quarter to play.
After the Warriors scored the opening bucket of the fourth, the Wasps put up eight in a row for a 20-point advantage at 61-41 with 7:09 on the clock. SWU would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way as Emory & Henry cruised to the 74-51 victory.

Yarber led all players with 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds to go along with two blocks.
