West Virginia 31-year-old killed in Wytheville crash

A West Virginia man stopped to change a tire along Interstate 81 in Wythe County is dead following a 3:07 p.m. crash on April 7.

John M. Sampson, 31, of Princeton, West Virginia, was stopped on the right shoulder heading northbound on Interstate 81 at the merge with Interstate 77, changing a flat on his 2013 Mini Cooper, Virginia State Police said.

Police said that the driver of a 2015 Chrysler 200 coming from southbound Interstate 77 lost control of the vehicle and spun sideways, running off the road before striking Sampson and his vehicle.

Sampson was taken to Wythe County Community Hospital, where he died later that same day.

The driver of the Chrysler, Jennifer H. Chambers, 51, also of Princeton, was not injured in the crash. Chambers was charged with reckless driving for failure to maintain control of her vehicle.
