Wythe County withholds APEX funds for fourth quarter

Wythe County Supervisors again withheld funds from the embattled APEX Center.

At their March 22 meeting, county officials denied much of the fourth-quarter appropriations earmarked for the center on a motion by Stacy Terry. The decision to leave just the funds in needed to cover insurance and other necessary payments passed with one dissension.

Even as funding was removed the center continues to have vents booked. On April 1, according to the website the facility will host the FFA Appalachian Area Rally. A Wytheville gun show and flea market is scheduled for April 30 and May 1.

On May 27 and 28, Bob Huff is slated to host Broncofest and on June 25, the website shows a sheep and goat symposium on the calendar.

All that could be up in the air as officials strip funding from the center.

Also at the March meeting, Supervisors gave the go-ahead to clearing the way for camera speed monitoring in school and work zones.

County Administrator Stephen Bear explained that Virginia law now allows sheriff’s offices to install and operate speed monitoring devices near schools and work areas. The law requires signs placed within 1,000 feet of any area where a device is used. He noted that the sheriff had asked the Attorney General for an opinion on whether the devices could be used on interstate work zones, saying an answer is expected in the next couple months.

The vote, which passed unanimously with two abstentions, is to move forward, Bear said, and the county will later be able to select a partner for the devices.
