Wythe County office expansion work begins

Construction begins this week on an expansion of Wythe County’s administrative offices.

Visitors to the Wythe County administrative and courthouse complex should use caution, pay attention to signs and avoid construction activities. Parking for visitors will be limited, and will require more use of on-street parking during construction.

The 14,400 square foot building is the second half of the building constructed to hold the Health Department and Department of Social Services offices. The $3.8 million project, which had bids ranging up to $4.6 million, has been awarded to low-bidder KNA Contractors from Wirtz, Virginia. Construction is expected to be complete in 2023.

The new building façade will match the existing Wythe County Office Building. The new addition’s main floor will house offices for the Commissioner of Revenue and the Treasurer, giving customers easier access to those constitutional officers. Other county offices will occupy the other two floors.

Once the new building is complete in 2023 and departments begin to move from the historic Courthouse, office space in the historic building will be renovated to provide for the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Sheriff’s Office and other court and law enforcement functions.

“Wythe County is growing and an expanding workforce needs office space to meet and serve the public,” said Wythe County Public Information Officer Elizabeth Delp. “This expansion will offer better customer access to some of our most vital functions.”
