Wythe Historical Society raising funds for new roof

The Wythe County Historical Society is raising funds to renovate the Wytheville Elementary School/Spiller Annex building donated by the county in 2019.

The building, which was built in 1927, had been unused since 2004. It had originally served as the elementary school for the town and county.

The two-story building on Tazewell Street was once part of an educational campus that included a Victorian-style high school building built in the late 1800s, an agricultural classroom building built in 1926 and a combination library and science building from 1934.

Plans calls for the building to serve as a center for education and preservation for the Historical Society, featuring exhibitions, archival collections and museum partnership activities. Once complete, the rooms in the old school will be used for adult and children’s programs and classes and there will be a larger research library with office spaces to be used for staff, volunteers and public events.

In all, the society hopes to raise $1.77 million for the renovation.

The most important and first thing to tackle, though is a new roof.
