Wytheville to hold Arbor Day celebration

The town of Wytheville will hold an Arbor Day Celebration at the Truss Bridge Park on Friday, Nov. 5, beginning at 10 a.m. Truss Bridge Park is located at 985 Reed Creek Mill Road.

After remarks from Wytheville Mayor Beth A. Taylor, the town will plant a tree in memory of Larry Wilhite.

Wilhite, who died in 2020, was an active member of the Wytheville Tree Advisory Committee and was retired from the U.S. Forestry Service.

Founded in 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation’s mission is to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. Earlier in 2021, Wytheville was named a Tree City USA for the third year in a row by the Arbor Day Foundation.

The town of Wytheville Public Works Department works in cooperation with the town’s Tree Advisory Committee to develop and implement plans for the care of existing trees and the opportunity to plant new ones.

The Tree Advisory Committee recently adopted a Specimen Tree Program to recognize trees with significance to Wytheville and the surrounding area. The trees will be scored based on various criteria including beauty, healthiness, location, history, etc. More information and a nomination form can be found online at https://www.wytheville.org/document-central under the Tree Advisory Committee section.
