Blue Devils finish third at Bobby Bates

Grayson County secured a third-place finish at the Bobby Bates Wrestling Classic held at UVA-Wise and hosted by Wise Central.

The Blue Devils 183.5 points. Central Wise won the tournament with 218 points. Patrick Henry-Roanoke finished second with 204 points.

Grayson placed three wrestlers in the finals, with all of them finishing in second.

At 106 pounds, Bo Anders secured the silver after pinning Nick Oaks of Lee in his opening match. In the quarterfinals, Anders pinned Boyd County’s Maverick Moore and swiped a 4-3 win over Justin Walker of Rural Retreat. In the finals, Anders fell by pin to James River’s Xaiden Wynn.

Freshman Caleb Thompson took second at 113 pounds, losing a nail-biter 3-2 in ride-out overtime to Rural Retreat’s returning champ Caleb Gibson.

Thompson pinned Bradyn Davis of Dobyns-Bennett in the opening match. In the next, Thompson majored Lebanon’s Portia Campbell 9-0 before sticking Kelan Ventro of Wise Central in the semis.

Cole Lorenz took second after pinning his way to the finals. Lorenz stuck Patrick Henry-Roanoke wrestler Michael Edmonds, Graham’s Dalton Robinson, Anderson County’s Evan Prewitt and Avery Hall of Central Wise. In the finals, Lorenz dropped a 6-2 decision to Ian Ray of Lebanon.

At 126 pounds, Sergio Rodriguez battled his way to a third-place finish. After pinning Hunter McGraw of Wise Central, Rodriguez scored a tech fall win 18-3 over John S. battle’s Britton Rock. In the semifinals, Abingdon’s Zachary Rasnake pinned Rodriguez. On the back of the bracket, Rodriguez bested Branden Culbertson of Central 10-4 and majored Patrick Henry-Roanoke’s John Clements 22-8.  

J.T. Porter took sixth at 120 pounds, falling by pin in his final match.

Landon King finished in sixth at 190 pounds. Jaxon Haga took eighth at 165 pounds.
